Absolutely gorgeous Jake. What is the "Smiths" that you refer to and what sort of timber have you used to frame the pilot house?

Thanks Peter, sometimes simple is harder to do, it had to be sturdy basic and be able to come apart and fit into the boat while staying the right size.
Larks the smiths is penetrating epoxy, I have 4 coats of varnish on it now, I'll get a pic up later. The whole pilot house is made out of sapele. The top will be t & g wrc with 1/4 ply epoxied over.

The big day!!!!!!!
Plan A was on the truck threw the door on a skid and on the boat but.......
It was too big to get out the door of the shop and too tippy
Soooooo.... Plan B put it on Johns boat and run it over.
Put the old main boom on for picking it
And.............
On it goes!!!!!!!!!
Joe Bakketun and John Thomas the owners of the shop and Zepher the fellow who did the fine job of building the Pilot house. All really great guys.
And there she is all bolted down, The 6 year tarp era comes to a close!!!!!
We can almost put the "TR" stamp on her
That's all for now back to AK in the mourning for Work for a couple months.

Terrific work Jake. I'm amazed at just how much it changes the look of her. And that table has come up beautifully, how many times can we say "well done!!" before you get sick of hearing it??

What a job!.. I've been following this thread and really just don't know what to say. The work you've done is really just wonderful. What a commitment.
Thanks for the updates. A great story.

Jake that looks fantastic! What material are you using for the windows? And will they be able to open? One more question if you don't mind, when you put in your ceiling was that T&G? Thanks and I hope that mine looks as good as yours someday. Capt. Z.
You may have already mentioned it but who was the designer of the boat? Thanks.
Those that fall behind will be left behind! Arghhhh
I will be watching closely, as my pilot house is going to be very similar, only I have not figured out how I will be doing the windows yet. I am thinking about the windows facing forward being hinged at the top with the slider hardware from a butter fly hatch to hold it open and lock it shut. The idea being, air flow even if it is raining. Capt. Z.
Looking very good, Jake.![]()

You need to keep in mind that super structures coming in contact with green water are under a enormous amount of stress. How easy is it to change out to a storm window or deal with if it gets blown out etc are all things to consider. Some of the older production pilot house glass boats out of asia had some really nice large rectangular bronze port lights up forward that would open.
Nice, Jake. Just in time to beat the stormy stuff here. Fun to see John's boat too...Auk, right?

Well, some real progress. we had our esteemed NA look at building us a new main mast several years ago but tabled it to focus on getting the interior of the boat done. In Jan we were looking around for material to think about getting this last of many big hurtles going. The shiprights we have been using off and on asked a fellow from Eden Saw in PT what they had for material, he said " Well I know of a boat that just pulled a stick they are going to replace and it sounds like it may fit" So..... These very nice people
sold us there old foremast, it was built new in the late 80's but to smaller scantling than the original, so thats why they are replacing it, it fit our rig plan by 8"!!!!!!
So here is the new main mast
Building a new step out of purple heart, the old one had to get chopped some years ago to get the old stick out
A new boomkin is in the works and the partners are almost done. Hopeing to get the stick up in the mid of next month.
More to come
Jake
Nice score!!!!
That purpleheart sure looks like one tough species! I imagine your boomkin and mast step will outlive other parts of the boat now.
I keep going back to look at your pilot house doors, Jake.I cannot make out the hinge details. Are the doors intended to lift off and be secured inside when you are on board in fair weather or are they intended to stay open like in the photo? It appears the trunk cabin molding along the aft face of the cabin bulkhead is preventing your doors from laying flat against the bulkhead. I had a similar affair happen with my doors and worked around it by taking the grinder to my protruding molding and working them down until my doors could be opened flat against the cabin bulkhead, with a nice scallop shape worked into the molding, beyond the edge of the opened doors, back to the full depth of my moldings.
Thanks for the progress updates. Always a treat!
Cheers!

Hello Peter,
Purple heart is good stuff for some things, I like the having to paint it part, they boat has alot of soa wood in it Vietnamese oak so hopefully it is all around for a while. The pilot house doors are on drop pin hinges to make them easily removed between July 4 to July 8th during summer here. I decided to wait till we get on board on the amount they open. If things look like they should open all the way to the bulkhead then I will knock off the trim to allow it, for now it's one of many things that can wait.

Picked these up today at the local cons shop 2ea. matching WC 10" opening portlights for the back of the pilot house

Mighty fine!
The coin,
on the way over to step the main mast i realised I had spaced getting a coin, so I dug all the change out of my pocket and gave it to my daughter to pick one, she pulled out a 2004 commemorative nickel, same age as her, that was for the lewis and clark expidition. Had a sailing scow or something like that on it. seemed like a good fit all around so in it went
more to come

Moving day!!!
Well several planets aligned and such and it became prudent to make the plunge and get on board. Many things will be left undone and a lot left to do but as my mentor says "a storage unit and at least 10% of the interior unfinished are musts before you move on your boat". So here we go June 1st is the big day.
Still playing with rigging and such more pics to come. Wish us luck!! It's been almost seven years to do our one year refit.
Jake
