    Default Some more progress

Back to work Sunday, had another push forward last month. We had high hopes of stepping the formast but didn't quite make it, I still have to make one more band and wrap up the wiring etc, but we are close all the fitting are on the boat and mast and the wire is all made up ready to go on.

Very nice and clean finish work! I really like your vertical staving work too! Are they tongue-n-grooved,splined or bead and coved? Will those in the pilot house be painted or left clear? Nice work on the mast fittings! So many nice things to see, along with a growing case of boat envy from me!!

    Continued success!!!

    Thanks Peter,

The lighter wood is all off the shelf fir t&g on one side beaded on the other. The aft cabin bulkheads are built as a hollow structure with sound proofing panels in them. The fir is not too thick so it worked out well for this. The mast does have a aft bow in it, was that way when we unstepped it.

As I recall, she sailed fine for a gaff schooner. We short tacked her up Newport Bay without much problem with the fish up, The leeway was typical for the bottom she has, no stability issues. Beating back up to Long Beach was also uneventfull, we sailed her up to the dock no problem. She'll serve you well, I recall stepping onto the dock thinking "nice boat" fun boat.

    Default Pilot house

Laying out the pilot house this week.

Started with 24" height and the same camber as the deck house 11' rad

That TR he is pretty clever, so down it went to 20" and more camber to the top 22" on CL

The rather odd bulwark will fade in when the lifellines go up. Eventully when the decks get replaced a new one will go in with a more even shear and not the substantial drop aft.

Funny thing Jake, when I saw the first picture of your pilot house mock-up I thought," Hey that looks rather good and just like something Tad Roberts would draw." In fact I was already formulating a reply in my head to that effect as I continued scrolling down before reading that it was indeed Tad's handywork. A nice style or signature for him to have developed!

A very handsome profile for your boat Jake and something I've been told is very much appreciated out on the West coast...sometimes

I look forward to seeing how you build it.

Doing a mock up is a sure way to obtain a look that is pleasing to your eye. Your eye is truly the only eye that should be considered. While the comments of others may approve or dissaprove, you are wise to approach the final form in this manner. Consider one thing. The apparant bulk of a pilot house can be reduced by slightly raising the after end or lowering the forward end. This is a subtle trick of optic perspective. The ancient Greeks were well aware of fooling the eye with their architectual distortion that made things look in better proportion than if built without it.

Thats interesting Jay, in searching for ideas I have run across pilot houses with just that raised aft rake before. I tend to start with function first and keep wittling until I get what I like. In this case it was pretty straight forward. I liked the sketch Tad had made, and standing in the cockpit I needed to see over the pilot house.

I can't figure out why the rail was done the way it is. The CL top on the cabin is the same as the original in the same footprint. As you said, to somebody elses eye I guess it looked right.

    Jake,
An easy way to approach this would be to first do a tracing of that drawing Tad did and match the, apparent, diminishing taper of the actual coach roof with the top of the pilot house and see how it looks. The roof lines of deck structures are most harmonious to the eye when the projected roof line touches the end of the stem or, in some cases the tip of the bow sprit. In this case, I should think that the projected line of the pilot house roof and the, nicely done, coach roof of the cabin should merge at the same projected point. Very subtile!
In the case of the cockpit combing, I believe that it once extended further aft but was cut off.
By the way, you are doing a great job! I like your boat!

    Default Decks

Well closing in on the deck re-furbish.

This after sanding all the paint off routing out the seams and overfilling with teak deck systems

That is how she sat for the last 2 years

I used the fein tool and sharpened the scraper with a file to remove 90% of the exess caulk, then sanded and put one coat of Daleys Ship and shore sealer and one coat of there teak oil, then the fun job of knifing out everywhere it had opened up over 2 years and re-shooting with TDS, only 12 tubes vs 110 for the initial job. Then back to sanding the whole thing out and putting on Daleys teak oil. This is 2 coats, I'm guessing it will take 10 or more to get it done.

    Default Up Up and Away!!

Well, finally got a stick up. Not a huge deal in the grand scheme of things but a pretty big one for us. Pulling the sticks was one of the first things we did and several years later now having one go back in feels pretty darn good.

    Formalities first
Original silver dollar and 3 new doolar coins ones one for each of us seemd to fit.

Finally the chock Pierre offered as a solution to my bendy mast ended up working out about perfect

Not without the headaces, I got a little too eager with setting the weges and put a nice check on the other side of the lower block of the partners, I have a plan for addressing it so not to worried about it.

It was sure nice to get a little positive feedback at the yard, as we are on the main dock that "everyone trucks by" we get alot of varied responses from people on the boat, some nice comments but a fair bit of "what are you thinking???" I've even been below working and heard someone go into a colorful description. The first thing the guys in the yard said when we got over to step the mast was " Its sure nice to have a real boat in here for once" It turns out 3 of them are grad from various wood boat schools, momentarily cursed to slave on the FRP beasts.

    Jake

Stephen, that was try number 3 on the block booty. 2 days of hand sewing wasted before they came out ok. The worse part is I'm so rusty that by the time I got near the end and was starting to get back in the groove, I couldn't live with the first efforts so I re-did them.

It's even better on the water when someone goes past in a dinghy and they are shouting at each other to be heard over the outboard with no consideration of how well their voices carry accross the water and onto the boat. The derogatory ones are easy to ignore as ignorant fools (or ex wooden boat owners who have come to their senses), but it is particularly pleasing to hear someone complement your boat when they don't know that you can hear.

That is so amazing, what you have accomplished! Don't bother to listen to the nay sayers, my bet is that they will never achieve anything close to what you have done here. Just a question and a request, if you don't mind. The question. The Samson post seems higher then any I have used in the past, do you like it that tall? I was thinking of making mine a little taller then it is now, and I am interested in your opinion. The request. Could you post a picture looking down into the space where your putting the pilot house? So we can see your layout for the stairs and floor, please. Again great job. Capt. Z

    Hello Capt Z

The height of the samson post is directly related to the pain in the ass it is for things getting caught on it. i made it really long then cut it to what looked like the highest it could probably be, once I get out sailing and see how things go I can always nip off a bit if it is a hassle. The biggest issue is obviously the staysail and sheets getting hung up but for now this is my starting point, it looks right to me. I'll see about putting a pic up in a bit. Our public web album is in my sig you can have a look there too

Thanks for writing back. I am going to make my samson post taller and try it out. Mine also has a 1 inch thick bronze rod about 5 inches above the bowsprit cross wise like a 'T', it makes it fast and easy to tie off to. I saw the pilot house pics in your album. Good job, so far. I like the parquet floor. (what is the wood?) I have been struggling to work mine out on paper before cutting the deck beams and carlins. I see on the transom your out of Friday harbor, we used to be moored up in Crows nest in Tacoma. Sort of cross the water neighbors.
    Thanks again, Capt. Z

We long to get back to Friday Harbor but Lake union is our home for the time being. We left Friday harbor for points south on our last boat and have been wrapped up in this girl for some time. I would like to take credit for the house etc but it is 100% Tad Roberts. He has a eye for what I think looks right, he was pretty instrumental in convincing us to go all the way and replace the house and do a pilot house. For layouts on paper my approach is to start with what looks right to your eye the refine until the function side of things is there, for in place I do the opposite function to looking right. I originally wanted a flush deck with 2 houses but the hull just did not have the room to make it practical. The parqeut is teak, when we first bought the boat we were up at east Teak in Sultan looking at Angelic rejects from the Virginia V restoration, we picked up a bunch of 12/4 at there cost, which turned into the cabin sole and sette faces. Scott at East teak had a box of the teak tiles and more or less throw them in. I thought I would find somewhere along the way to use them. I was able to do the pilot house sole and steps with only one tile left over so it worked out pretty well. As far as your Pilot house these are my thoughts. You should be able to stand in the cockpit and see over it, you should be able to stand up right in it and have a good view. If you plan on running the boat from it vs. just having a place out of the weather then they are sort of 2 different animals so it is something to consider. You need to lay out your entry so the biggest thing you might want to take off the boat wll fit all the way through it and out.

Excellent job Jake. Thanks for sharing, it adds a little motivation to my job at hand. Hopefully I will set a mast, after I build one that is? So, what is the goop you used to set your mast in and how common is it to do this?

It's Dolfinite (sp?) There are a couple current threads on the pros and cons of it, just a basic bedding compound. It's a basic wood to wood joint that will work some so I think this is a good application for it. I'm not an expert but I think the mast step and partners are a place you want to have bedded very well.

It's a little crooked but that is just my trademark so I know I did it. First time cutting threads on a lathe so that was cool.

Pilot house is under way very exciting hope to have it in in a couple weeks.

The fine folks at Bakketon and Thomas, theguys who built the cabin are doing the pilot house as well.

    Back to the interior,

Closing in on the head, 1st big tile job, pretty happy with the results. Got the step/locker in as well.

    Pilot house is getting close

Red cedar that we used as a template for all the T&G we ran for the rest of the boat. These are left overs from a job several years ago, just enough to do the pilot house overhead. Comes with about 10 coats of varnish from native brightworks, can't beat that
