I'd be glad to help "crew" on the trip to VT and back - still have a CDL A w/endorsements....and have driven Mack "U" and "R" series in the 1970's.

Just hope it isn't a triplex transmission ! I was most happy when Mack started making the Maxidyne/Maxitorque engine/transmission.

Ah, Bob, Thanks, but no thanks for a vehicle with a 5 x 4 transmission.

I learned to drive large commercial buses (diesels, mostly w/automatic transmissions) at the university as a freshman. That was my part-time job for 4 years while school was in session. Summer job was working in a supermarket warehouse/distribtution center, and they sponsored me for a tractor-trailer license to have a spare driver to cover vacations, illness, etc. I learned in a old White with a ten speed road ranger (single stick with a button).

With the new license in hand, I was assigned to cover vacations, and drove any truck was available. First week was an old underpowered U-series Mack. Hoped in, and there were three sticks. WTF??. Spent more time looking at the shift diagrams and hooking the left arm through the steering wheel to manipulate two of the three sticks at a time. Didn't look out the windshield all that much. I think there are still some drivers laughing about "Joe College" grinding a bunch of gears while trying to leave the yard.

Grad school was a whole different story....summer job was driving Mack R-685 ST's hauling gasoline in a tank trailer for one of the major oil companies. 5 speed Maxidyne/Maxitorque, turbo charged, air conditioned and barely broken-in at 80,000 miles on the odometer. Twice the pay, and 1/10 the work. And when the tank was empty, it could fly! Numerous times I had to "forget" to turn in the tachograph paper those summers.

Ah....Yes....The old "Split shift"..... I drove a Diamond T fire truck with one of those in Vt.... No brakes either....Good thing it was geared real low....
