Hello:

Can you help me with placing a value on a 1950 International 14, cedar
lapstrake, white oak ribs, original Sitka spruce mast - completely restored
using West System epoxy repair/restoration techniques?

Is there a market for such an animal?

I don't really know about the value of your boat, but on thing that would help is knowing where you are located. In the member profile area, there is a place to say where you live. You don't have to be real specific, but some information helps. We have members from all over the world. The value of a boat varies from state to state, as well as country to country.

This is beginning to be a pet peeve of mine.

I should also add that I wish people would be more specific when asking a question. Everybody wants to help, but it is silly that the first reply to many posts is something like “tell us more about…”

Hi. Woodwind Yachts here in Ontario currently has an International 14 listed on their web site (www.woodwindyachts.com) for ... (are you sitting down?) $10,000 US, fully restored. However, it sounds like it will be a new boat, what with every rib replaced.

I would note, however, that the boat hasn't sold for at least 6 months-1 year, so maybe it's priced a little aggressively.

Here's an excerpt:

1950 - International 14 Racing Dinghy

Varnished lapstrake cedar planking on white oak frames. Vessel comes with Sitka spruce spars, old sails and rudder. (centreboard is missing) She requires complete restoration and refinishing as follows:

Replacement of every steam-bent rib in the vessel along with the keel, transom, approx. 6 planks, decks, coamings and floorboards. Misc. repairs are required throughout. She will need to be completely stripped to bare wood and properly re-varnished.

We would be please to perform this restoration work for you for approx. $8,000.00 - 10,000.00 U.S. depending upon your level of expectations, plus the cost of new sails.

As is $750.00 Cdn.

The wooden boat market (especially smaller ones) is a funny thing. The right buyer will pay through the nose for the boat they want, with it in horrid condition. While some people will give away the same boat, when it only needs a coat of paint. Check with local wooden boat groups or go to a messabout, if possible
