Looks like a Sam Rabl Picaroon from his book _Boatbuilding in Your Own Backyard_. Sam was one of those designers from the days when every yachting, boating, and mechanics magazine had a how to build article in it, a contemporary of Westy Farmer, Billy Atkins, et al.

My buddy just built one of these. He strip planked and fiberglassed it though. Launched it last year. Had the priviledge of sailing it a couple of times. Very seaworthy. He put a small diesel in his. Looks like a little pirate ship after the cabin and decks are on. I could probably get pictures but have no idea how to add them here.

First - don't attach photos. Most web forums don't allow it, and space
limitations are the main reason why.

Second - Instead of attaching them to a thread, post the pics on the web
somewhere. You have a free website area with any paid ISP's email account,
or use www.picturetrail.com or other free hosting service. Once posted on
the web, right-click the image to copy the URL (web address). Always test
first by pasting the image URL into the window of a web browser and see if
the image displays.

Third - once posted on the web, try this procedure while logged in to this
Forum:

1. Click the "User CP" link in the browser window in the top left of the
menu bar.
2. Click the "Edit Options" link about 1/4 of the way down the left column.
3. In the "Misc Options" at the bottom of the next page, select "Enhanced
Interface" from the pulldown list.
4. Once this interface has been selected, in any "Reply" window you can
click the "insert photo" icon --> a little yellow square icon with the stamp
in the upper right corner, the mountains in the lower center.
5. Once the little dialog box titled "Please enter the URL of your image"
comes up, paste the URL of the photo in the field.

If unsure of the procedure, test first by pasting the image URL into the
window of a web browser.

I agree on Rabl's Picaroon.

Just got the book down and it looks like Picaroon 2 which is the round bilged variant. (Rabl: Boatbuilding In Your Own Backyard pp180ff) listed as 18'-0" x 7'-6" x 3'-6".

The chapter begins...

Picaroon is that same little boat that Brice Johnson built for me in Cambridge over thirty years ago, the same boat in which Hank Hemingway had his great adventure in the Gulf of Mexico, sailing from Mobile to Neuvitas in Cuba. The same tabloid cruiser of which Westy Farmer wrote: "A delight to the eyes of every sailorman," and to which the late Charles Hall attached the title of the "Perennial Picaroon". She is also the same little ship that was destined to become world-famous and to have been built on every continent of this globe.

Not a bad looking hull. Top strake might be a bit wide, but otherwise nicely lined off, I'd say. Can't tell for sure if it's plank or plywood. Any guesses?

When the deck and rub strake are put on the plank will look right.



Absence of interior framing suggests strongly that the planking is plywood. Nicely done, I'd say, from what we can see anyway.

The mast (if that is what it is) looks a little wonky tho...but it might be just that it is unsupported towards the front. Looks pretty good from far.

I tend to check the local want ads for wooden boats and saw this one...looks kind of salty but I wasn't familiar with the design. It does look like it would be a great project but I've got some others on the go!

Hey Guys,

I live in campbell river, so im going to go check it out. Ill let you know how she looks in person. As for the wider sheer plank, I like it like that. That way when you put your gunwale on, the sheer doesn't look skinny.
