Utah Phillips was a peach! Years ago, there was a big anniversary hoopla for the Golden Spike out at Promontory Point north of the Great Salt Lake. Some unrealistic state official invited Utah Phillips to perform, based on all the train songs he's recorded. So there was a horde of dignitaries and poo-bahs sitting in folding chairs, and old Brucie launched into a tale (which I shall present in severely attenuated form) about the first Mormon generation in Utah.

Once they harvested a couple crops and were getting enough to eat, all those wives started producing lots of children. And the Church leaders got worried there'd be another food shortage. So they had a meeting to come up with ways to deal with all those hungry little mouths.

And Brigham Young had a bright idea: Child Taxidermy.

You could keep the kids around, but not have to feed them, etc. etc.

Needless to say this went over like the proverbial lead balloon. A few of the dignitaries tried to have ol' Bruce arrested. Not sure if he ever got paid for the gig.

Yesterday I set out tomato plants and pepper seeds.
It's been the warmest winter in history with only 14 freezing nights.

North Island got pretty ripped up today. Big winds, lots of rain. Bit rough down here but no major damage. Friends were lucky when a tree from the neighbours place fell into the street and not onto houses or cars.....took out the power though for while.

Went to a bar in town tonight but they weren't playing twangy music so we left.

Get a puppy... Makes what Mother Nature can do look like child's play....
Carter was supposed to be on the over-night shift of puppy patrol on-call.... Around 12:30 I hear a whimpering, whining, scrambling, and a steady, snoring sound.... So I figure the snoring part probably isn't coming from the same body as the whining, whimpering sounds. I get up, put my fuzzy slippers on (After locating them), and bring Aldo down stairs and out the front door.....
Fine.... Good puppy. Thank you for asking to go out instead of peeing on the floor..... But now is not play time..... No you can't have my leg. Bring back that sock. Please don't eat the bed. An hour later and Aldo is snoring along with Carter, and I'm staring at the ceiling....
5AM and I hear the same..... 7AM Carter gets up and takes Aldo out for a third time, and I fall back into a deep sound sleep..... 9AM and Aldo's ready to go again, and Carter's already gone shopping..... By 9:15 Aldo's snoring again...... I gotta get the phone number of his agent....
