It really is quite difficult to build an ugly wooden boat.
Good evening Sophie. I have yet to formally make your acquaintance! Nice to meet ya!![]()
Hi JB, we seem to have missed each other before, I'm glad that I've finally caught up with you. That painting is really awesome, wonderful!
The guys tell me you are a writer as well. That's great. makes a change from all the SW cowboys and the Wyoming wolf, as much as I like them all. hey I'm going to be away for a while could you check that Bobby sticks to his physio, the guys will forget and he'll try and dodge it. Someone's going to have to keep an eye on him. We want him back up and running on all 8.
I'd appreciate the help with that if you can do it would be a real help.
he better be here longer than that! I hear that your book is done!
What's it about, the guys all mumble into their beers when I ask except for Chip who just says buy it and you'll find out. Helpful!
Lefty's the only one who really knows what it's about (unless the other guys snuck over to my blog and read something) 'cause he read an early draft of the manuscript. In fact, I first became acquainted with The PUB when I posted A Question for a Work of Fiction in the Bilge a few years ago. Here's the gist of UNCHARTED: A Story for a Shipwright (quoted from my blog):
Shipwright Sam Wesley doesn’t dare imagine a life outside of boat-building and family responsibility, let alone imagine a girl who spears fish at twenty feet or beheads garter snakes with the throw of a knife. At least not until the day Marlena, a peculiar waif with stories to tell, arrives at his family’s bed-and-breakfast.Marlena’s far-fetched tales of a captain’s shipwreck with a Venezuelan woman and a black slave, and a pregnant woman’s survival on an uninhabited island, leave Sam wondering if they are merely the imaginings of a delusional girl. Could her stories possibly hold a key to his family’s ancestry? Perhaps there’s far more to her stories than she’s telling him.
I'll leave you two women in the snug getting acquainted. I believe a milkstout is appropriate at this juncture.
I'll bid you both good night, its nearly tomorrow here.
It really is quite difficult to build an ugly wooden boat.
sounds interesting, I can see why you would come here to get some background.
I can stay up late tonight, I'm off on holiday tomorrow and I sleep in the car.
Night Nick.![]()
Good night for me too--got some stuff to do...see ya'll later!![]()
Well, Jesus, Mary, and Joseph! I'll certainly buy JB's book and read it. If you don't buy this book than there might not be others. Writing is for the most part the triumph of art and optimism over commercial reality. Of the books published by major houses in the US, only one in twenty earns the advance. There are legions of people who wish to write books yet seldom buy one.
Nice lot of pubsters tonight. I'll have a double rum, Appleton's I think, with two cubes of ice. A blessing on this house.
Sophie—if you're determined to go up one of those huge, scary Swiss mountains, do take care. I just heard that another friend died in an avalanche on New Year's day. So I'm thankful for my luck (and/or trepidation) during my climbing career, which was mostly little scrambles up this and that.
The Wolf Goddess has been trying to keep up with the ailments of Alpha Mom, and the contention of specialists and clinics to cash in on her ills. I hate to think of doctors as predators, but quite a few here in the 'States seem to fit that description. The insurance companies, in terms of vile, coldhearted gouging, are even worse. So hang in there Lefty. (If you need werewolf support, let me know.)
Has the Bobster stepped out? Here's a toast to his noble presence.
hi Chip,
I'll certainly back a fellow "pub" girl by buying her book even if it was just to keep her painting!! did you see that painting, great!
Sorry to hear that there's illness in your pack chip. Medicine is such a big business there and the companies are all in it for the buck.
hey aren't you working on a novel too, about NZ if the rumours are true?
As for staying safe during my break away from here, always! Though you can't guarantee these things.
Sorry to hear you lost another friend to the mountains. its a harsh game sometimes.
Not working on the bloody thing now, as I'm trying to finish a masters on fluvial geomorphology. But I can't help thinking about it. The main character is a Kai Tahu woman from Lyttelton Harbour NZ, who is returning home c. 1940 on a cargo liner. And, of course, reliving all the sins of her life.
Since JB posted her character's portrait, here's mine:
Te Mära O'Slattery Smith.
Wow she's beautiful, looks really strong! So your story is based around a real woman or is that a composite you've created?
Don't forget Nick is a published author too. I have his book
Well guys I'm out of here for a while. be good and please keep an eye on BobbyT!

There's nothing more expensive than a "free" boat.
Sleeping in the car Sophie?..... Is that slang for something, or are you really camped out in the back seat of a Humber Super Snipe?....
And yes, I'm in a foul mood, so just ignore me....

Whoa... I'm back. It's been a while. I was kidnapped by Pat Ford. He held me hostage by threatening to keep my name off of next years RumTasting event. That didn't worry me. I've got other friends who'd have let me know when & where. But then he threatened to drink ALL the rum before I arrived. Now THAT'S a threat that's all too real, and all too believable. He said it was just TOO embarrassing to have friends that hung out in a virtual bar, flirted with virtual waitresses, and drank virtual liquor. I finally convinced him that - besides being a good crowd... virtual liquor and waitresses is all the doc will allow for the moment. I had to promise to add the real thing later - but here I am. Free again... free again!

Welcome home David! How're you doing tonight?
Never trust a man with a clean workshop.
Thanks. I'm doing pretty darned decent at the moment. Signed up a new job today. Lessee... at my current rate of production, that puts me with a backlog of... oh... approximately... infinity <sigh> Well... everyone is signing on with the full knowledge that I'm not moving very fast - and delivery dates are entirely open-ended. So I'm happy, though I do hate to leave a customer hanging... and a final check uncollected. <G> I worked for maybe an hour today, and will probably do another hour or so in drawing tonight.

Thanks to the greenhouse, we had fresh tomato soup. Also toasted cheese on crusty bread, sprinkled with fresh parsley and pepper, and a bottle of Garnacha.
Taken today:
The heirloom Siberian tomatoes keep right on blooming and producing.
Very gray with light snow. I spent half the day in the greenhouse, pruning the excess tomato foliage, planting some flats, and seeding the center bed with a lettuce mix, scallions, Shunkyo radishes, and spinach. Nice to work in there when it's cloudy. With full sun, it reaches the high 80°s F and I'm sticky with sweat. In midwinter.
Rock on guys

I'm sure I'd love cricket if it made any sense at all.... Hit the ball, get someone else to chase it, run a little, hit the ball.... Kinda like playing with a dog.... But then you guys start trying to keep score, and that's where the problem is.
The first full Sunday of the new year... (I don't consider New Year's Day to be the new year. because for so many it's partially an extension of the last year).
I'll be back in a few with a nice brunch menu..... Any requests New Bobby?

Morning Gents, Never been to Tobago, but a Trinidad native was kind enough to save my arse, one evening in Charlotte Amalie! Always hold a warm spot in my heart for those from Trinidad. Hope to visit there some day.
That bit of story was from my mothers childhood story book. A sweet tale which captures a culture and time past.
Best to ya' Honorable BoT.
Good story Mr.7, both of them.Hope you are well. I think Lefty ran off some where.

G'day Lefty, Bobster, 7, and Meli.
I'll have a Long Black, or as they say on this side, an Americano.
Bright and sunny here, after a subzero night. Think I'll fire up and do a spot of winter grilling: sausages and chicken adobo. Dream that I'm out on Great Barrier Island with the waves easing in.
