Default Bending Wood Source in SF Bay Area

Hi guys, I am new to this forum. Right now I am building a Cunningham greenland SOF kayak, first boat project... and loving it enough to see that I will be doing more. One thing that drove me nuts was finding suitable bending wood in the SF bay area (or anywhere in California, for that matter). They just do not do that out here.

However, I was finally successful. Gryffin Hardwoods in Morgan Hill, Ca Phone 408-776-3118. Barry Uden is the owner, carpenter and sometimes boat builder himself. He has just started up a sawmill and (if you are just a bit paitent) can set you up with different kinds of hardwoods and can supply them green. He was a godsend. Prices are reasonable.

I think this is the right place to post this, if not I welcome feedback. :-). Mostly I wanted to pass this along, the search drove me to mild dispair. I hope the information can be of help to someone else.

Mike, that is good information. We live in Reno (nothing here) and our boats are in Oakland. We were just starting to inquire. We had ordered some w/o for our last projects and only found out later, that by tremendous luck what came was heart wood with no runout. Since then we haven't found a stick of it on purpose here in town.

    Welcome aboard

Thanks for the info Mike. Thats a good tip for the Bay Area forumites. Wonder if he would be a good source for knees and such? Might have to gove him a call.

For what's it worth , I bought most of my wood to restore my schooner from Mr Buchanan at :

    Good choice of exotic woods
It was also the only place I could find 2 1/2" thick DG planking
