Default The best movie to come out of the US for sometime.

Last night I went and saw The Prairie Home Companion...what a brilliant movie.
Back in the early 80's i use to sit back and listen to the radio show The Prairie Home Companion and just indulge in the pure cruisiness of the show.
The movie has an excellent line up of actors and is well worth seeing.
    ***** five stars from me.

    I got it on DVD

Yep, Ol' G.K.s pretty good. And may none of us meet her any time soon:

I'm really looking forward to it, but I dasn't buy it myself until I'm sure Santa isn't going to bring it for me.

Maybe we could sell off the whole cast and etc. to help lower the national debt? We get more than enough hokum from DC as it is.

Definitely a very good/worhtwhile expenditure of two hours!!!

Default Well, I happen to love the radio show.....

and I bought the movie the first day it was out, but aside from GK himself and Meryl Streep I wasn't that thrilled with it.

Boy, that sounded pretty pissy, didn't it? Forget I said anything. It was great. Loved it.

I saw Prairie Home Companion last summer, and then a week later my daughter dragged me to see The Devil Wears Prada. Any doubts I might have had about Meryl Streep's utter brilliance were dispelled in a moment, because the characters she played in the two movies were completely different, and both were completely real. I shake my head in wonder that the same actress could have played both of those amazing characters.

Default I have always been very impressed with Ms.Streep.

And she found time to do all of that, be a mom, and never have her name dragged through the mud on the way to being possibly our most accomplished actress.

I thought that the character that she played in 'PHC' was entirely believeable and very likeable.

I watched it on a plane flying across the country... sorry, but as much as I like Keilor, it didn't grab me. Watching it on that tiny little screen beneath the back of some guys head had something to do with it, maybe. I ended up watching the plane's progress on the gps channel. Now THAT was exciting! If they would only tie it into Google's zoomable satellite photos, it'd be a real trip.

    The Devil Wears Prada.
yeah, I enjoyed that as well. My partner dragged me along, i figured it was going to be another chick flick. It was out of the ordinary, not predictable...and that's good in my book.

Mild "thread creep", admittedly, and I haven't seen the movie and really like Garrison Keeler and the Prarie Home Companion for that matter, but I wish he would never sing on the radio again. What it is about the man that makes him sing without the least bit of talent for the job (and endlessly) is beyond me. In my view, it makes the program unlistenable for a great portion. Really a shame, like the emperor has no clothes. I can't be the only person in the world that feels this way. Can I?
I will see the movie at some point, I'm sure, like his books, his humor, just can't abide his music.

This week on A Prairie Home Companion, we continue our seasonal stopover at the Town Hall with special guests, the prolific resophonic guitarist and the most recorded dobro player in history, Jerry Douglas and his band. We've got the 44th poet laureate of the United States, a Distinguished Professor of English at the City University of New York since 1968, Billy Collins. Also with us, the Royal Academy of Radio Acting: Tim Russell, Sue Scott, and Fred Newman, the News from Lake Wobegon, and sitting in with the Guy’s All-Star Shoe Band, the cunning commander of catgut Andy Stein. Join us this Saturday for a live broadcast of A Prairie Home Companion from the heart of Broadway, in New York City.

Can't say anything about the movie just yet, but Jim and I went to see this live last night and it was the most fun we've had since the weather turned cold. Those folks are just brilliant.

Step away from your computer screens!!!

I've seen the show live while attending an NPR conference in Seattle as an exhibitor, and thought it was hilarious to watch; the more so when you realize how few people are involved in the actual live creation (and the sound effects are hilarious, actually funnier in person than on the air). I still loathe Garrison's music. Jerry Douglas on the other hand, is brilliant.
