What's that whole keel / underbody design about? Couldn't see how the rudder would work, looked more like a swing keel or ??

Sanford experimented with the Herreshoff-like boats he built. The cutaway you noticed was so a Saildrive unit could be used if wanted, among other things.
He also built MAGIC, a fifty foot Alerion type, as some might think of it, that had a (IIRC) cupro-nickel keel/floor underbody with a cold molded hull/topsides attached.

I read your message regarding the Sanford Alerion. I purchased her several weeks back. The motor mount has been removed and her hull has been stripped down to bare wood and is ready for bottom paint and 8 coats of varnish on her hull. The delam was very minor and not structural. She will soon be right as new!
