    Default Rowboat Pricing

I recently built two Bolger Gloucester Light Dories. I would like to sell one of them, but have no idea how much I can get for one. I am located on the water in Wilmington, NC. Does anyone out there have any suggestions? For those of you who aren't familiar with the boat, its an "instant boat" 15' 6" made from 1/4 inch marine plywood, the bottom is 1/2 inch marine plywood. I made the seats from 1x6 cedar and the gunwales from oak, both finished clear. The hull is painted white with petite primer then petite easypoxy. It would include oars.

Check the classifieds in "Messing About in Boats" magazine. It is also a good place to advertise a boat like that.

Check our hosts website -- they have a pdf of boats for sale, correct? Might be a good place to advertize also.

I'd try googling the heck out of anything close, look for ads in local and national sailing / boating magazines and their websites, and check craigslist all over the country.

There are also a number of different home-built-boat groups on the web, and also on Yahoo. Try joining some of these and ask your question there. Here are a few Yahoo links, but try searching for "bolger" and "dory" -

Be as clear about the boat as you can, and put some good photos up on the web so you can link to them. You have not listed a location on this forum, for example, so we don't know if you are in Tennesee or Timbuktu.

Think of it as a research project, grab all the free boating magazines you can find, buy the others, search the web, and get yourself some numbahs...

    Good luck!

    Brendan-
I recently shopped for and bought a plywood rowing kitboat of somewhat comparable proportions ; by the time the kit was delivered i'd spent more than you are asking.
    See :

    I found the WoodenBoat online sales somewhat instructive, see advertisements # : 43, 70, 106, 145, 148, 150.

One thing clear is that the prices of the small boats range widely , which isn't surprising given the disparities in materials/workmanship/design ... and how well the boat meets the users' specific requirements.

It's hard for me to imagine a less than brand new bolger boat going for that much...

    Around here, that is.

Unless you are in a hurry, pop it up at the desired price on your local www.craigslist.org and see what sort of nibbles you get -- also consider listing it in your local sailing/boating magazines.

FIRST -- get some photos up online, you'll need 'em for the listings anyway. Be specific on the building quality, materials used, length of the oars, weight of the boat, etc.

    Good luck!
