I'm getting ready to put the slats in for my seats. They will be made from white oak and will just make the bend cold. I plan on steaming them to make it a little easier on installation.

The question is can I put on a couple of coats of varnish prior to steaming?

Thanks Margo. I thought not, but it would make varnishing easier. Oh well, guess I'll just have to be carefull when I varnish.

Chad, can you steam bend them to shape, then varnish, then install?

It is not that simple. There is not a set form for these seats. I will have to steam them, than cut each individual piece as it is fitted in.

When steam bending oak, it is a good idea to coat with linseed oil first. It helps keep the heat in the wood a little longer, so you have more bending time. This also acts as a sealer for the wood. The heat opens the pores and allows the oil in, thus sealing it for you. Cuts down on the steps prior to varnishing that way.

I may give that a try.
