    Default Launching ! Another Shellback hits the water.

    I know its just a Shellback, but its our first sailboat so I gotta do this.
    Not much wind the first day but we did get much better wind the past couple of days. The launching was at Lake Winnipesaki (sp) for a week long 50th anniversary celebration/reunion for my wifes parents.

    It was cool to see Gail and her Dad go out sailing togeather. Anyway thanks to those of you that have provided answers to my stupid questions and to Clinton Chase for much advice on this style of construction !

    edited to add: Shamefully I forgot to mention. Gail, my wife, sewed the sail and when hit with a fresh breeze is as smooth as can be. In these pics the air is pretty light. And as you can see I didn't haul the yard on the same side as the boom !!

    Well, it may be "just a Shellback," but she looks fine! Congradulations on a great job, and have a lot of fun with it.

    Ugh! Another Shellback hits the water before mine!!! Sometimes I feel as though I'll never finish mine... actually I'm shooting for a late September launch!!! Anyway... your boat looks great! Congratulations, I'm sure you will get plenty of enjoyment from that fine little craft!

    May I offer some inspiration. I have only been on a few small boats, but I can say that the first time I found a fresh breeze I was really suprised at how the Shellback picked up and really took off. And it is a blast to row also. Glides along really nice. So if you haven't been sailing in a Shellback you will be really pleased. So hurry up !!

    Awesome Eric! Clint has his up at WoodenBoat right now but he hasn't finished the sail rig yet. It'll be cool to see them side by side at the Rowgatta.

    By the way, what's the Rowgatta Steven? I think that Clint mentioned something about it but I don't remember when or where it's supposed to be.

    This is an article from last year. I know this years Rowgatta is next weekend, saturday. I have to email Clint to get the details, he is current learning to design sailboats up at WB school.

    Steven may know the details !!!


    A Shellback Regatta would be a great idea. Clint mentioned that there are still Shellback races happening in Brooklin, ME. Theres gotta be hundreds of these boats around. Maybe our sponser would host one at the school, and use it to raise funds for a worthy project. Fall sail/regatta/cookout.

    Are you trailering or transporting in a pick-up?

    I'm pianting those exact same colors on my CK17 right now!! Cream on the inside and outside the rubrail, C-green for a stripe and the rest white. I'm using Kirby's. I was planning a smaller green stripe, but now that I've seen yours, I think I'll widen it.

    A true beauty. That sail looks to be drawing nicely in the first pic.

    It won't truly have been commissioned til it's splashed in salt water though.

    Yeah thats the lake. My spelling sucks. I am using my pickup right now. But I think a small trailer will be much more convienient.

    Joe, My paint scheme makes it look like a little "work" boat I think. Very simple. Now if Clint posts pics of the Shellback he just finished you will see a yacht quality finsh. I have some pics of his and ours on their mooring and man do they look cool. Since he hasn't posted his launch pics yet I wont steal his show. But after he posts I will add them to this thread.

    Wonderful. May you have many years of big smiles. Take lots of friends out for a "first sail" and watch the expression and the smiles on their faces. Lots of fun in small sailboats. You did a great job.
