Hmm ---- are you thinking of going sailing. Does this signify good news?

I've been offered a position as (kinda) Charter skipper in your part of the world in October. It's a Bennie toe thirty something, and I'm sailing it towards Newport, with paying guests. I'll give you a call and do that wire splice for you.

my problem is that I no longer have much strength in my hands or arms as I once did...it gets a bit frustrating. A couple of days ago I went to the warehouse to check on some spare stock and opened my spare rigging box, so I have the parts...and the wire was about 4 feet longer than I think I'm going to need so I decided to do an eye splice. I was having a bit of trouble also with some lines, but it's due to lack of physical strength...and ya gotta imagine the weight of a small box with three assorted 3/8ths stalocks, associated Merriman toggles, a pair of 1/2 inch stalocks w/toggles and a bronze 3/4 and 1 inch turnbuckle......almost didn't get them in the car......

edited to add...when ya get here gimme a call....hope ya like crab cakes etc....

    Default Splicing wire

Hi Chuck. Don't feel bad. Even very experienced wire splicers have a hard time getting a decent job with small 1x19. Sta-lok, Norseman or Quick-Attach terminals have rendered wire splicing obsolete, so I just go with the flow. Also, the mechanical terminals are almost 100% as strong as the wire, whereas splicing is considerably less. I even used Sta-Loks on my ancient Herreshoff 12.5. I suspect Capt. Nat would have used them if they had been available years ago.

I know....just me...and tired....was looking at another project much smaller than Tana Mari...something I might be able to handle...but a gaff rig...
I had forgotten that I had bought up a bunch of new chromed Merriman parts a gazillion years ago.....found headboard shackles..toggles etc.....even a Nicro reel halyard winch..and Gawd..those things are dangerous...I mentioned it to a friend and he wants to buy it, even after I told him that I thought they were the most dangerous device you could put on a boat...
I gotta do something to keep me outta trouble...

    Chuck,
Need a set of younger hands/arms? I don't know how to splice wire, but you do. You don't have the strength/dexterity (sounds like what you're saying) but I do...

You can tell me what to do, and while I learn something, you get the splices you need done. Contrary to popular opinion around here, I do take instruction.

Guess it's time to bring the redneck cadillac down and have another cuppa?

    Chuck:

Don't forget I'm right next door - limited skills, but happy to help if you tell me what to do. Even if it's just lifting stuff, don't hesitate to let me know.

My sympathy comes from being there and wearing the t-shirt.

Query: Is there anything that penetrates human flesh faster, deeper and more painfully than a single, wayward strand of SS wire?
