    Default The politics of hair?

Now for your daily dose of the bizarre:

BLACK HAIR....Erin Aubrey Kaplan writes today about the politics of hair:
The debate about the best choices for "black hair," always charged, is flaring up again. A Louisiana sheriff said last week that anyone on the streets in dreadlocks "can expect to be getting a visit from a sheriff's deputy" because a murder suspect answering that description remained at large. In April, Susan L. Taylor, the iconic editorial director of Essence magazine, canceled a campus speech when she discovered the college forbids its students to wear "unusual" hairstyles — including braids, which are Taylor's signature look. This was noteworthy because the college was Hampton University, one of the nation's oldest historically black campuses. Then it was discovered that Black Enterprise magazine had a similar ban for student interns.

....What's troubling is that, by being forced to change their hair, black people once again are being forced to shoulder the burden of proof: We're not as fearsome as we look. It's up to us to mitigate our dark skin and ethnic features by framing them with hair that's as neat and unethnic as possible.

I've got a neighbor of mixed heritage who has these little spikey ringlets. He often wears a cut off T-shirt sleeve on his head, with the ringlets sticking out the top. I wish I had hair that did something interesting like that.

There is a fellow here in town - a quite normal and restrained fellow, I might add - who has a beard of similar length & shape as Dan's, but it is dyed a brilliant electric blue.
Hope for the best, but plan for the worst.

    Talking

    Enjoy!!

    Hair Lyrics

    She asks me why
    I'm just a hairy guy
    I'm hairy noon and night
    Hair that's a fright
    I'm hairy high and low
    Don't ask me why
    Don't know
It's not for lack of break
    Like the Grateful Dead
    Darling

    Gimme head with hair
    Long beautiful hair
    Shining, gleaming,
    Streaming, flaxen, waxen

Give me down to there hair
    Shoulder length or longer
    Here baby, there mama
    Everywhere daddy daddy

Hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair
    Flow it, show it
Long as God can grow it
    My hair

Let it fly in the breeze
And get caught in the trees
Give a home to the fleas in my hair
    A home for fleas
    A hive for bees
    A nest for birds
    There ain't no words
For the beauty, the splendor, the wonder
    Of my...

Hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair
    Flow it, show it
Long as God can grow it
    My hair

I want it long, straight, curly, fuzzy
    Snaggy, shaggy, ratty, matty
    Oily, greasy, fleecy
    Shining, gleaming, streaming
    Flaxen, waxen
    Knotted, polka-dotted
    Twisted, beaded, braided
    Powdered, flowered, and confettied
    Bangled, tangled, spangled, and spaghettied!

    Oh say can you see
    My eyes if you can
    Then my hair's too short

    Down to here
    Down to there
    Down to where
    It stops by itself

They'll be ga ga at the go go
When they see me in my toga
    My toga made of blond
    Brilliantined
    Biblical hair

My hair like Jesus wore it
    Hallelujah I adore it
    Hallelujah Mary loved her son
Why don't my mother love me?

Hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair
    Flow it, show it
Long as God can grow it
My hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair
    Flow it, show it
Long as God can grow it
    My hair

Jack is lurking on the forum today. It could be Dutch, Moonshadow, Jack or someone else we have never dealt with before (or me). Same effect though.

Maybe Salty Hoosier will share his wood boat projects with us.

Hey Salty, post an image of your wooden boat, work shop, plans being considered... show us you not just another damn troll.

    Default De-evolving

My SWMBO is a teacher, she has a theory that some are actually de-evolving.
Maybe Salty's cheesed off because it's happened to him/her/it. (depends how far the de-evolution has gone)

Default Salty, you have jumped into the pond of...

liberalism (the pond being this particular forum) with both feet. You knew it going in (there ARE signs, you know) so you have only yourself to blame if you are heavily outnumbered. Keep fighting. Some of these folks consider insult and injury as a way to pass the time, so you'll have plenty to fight over.

As far as the hair issue with people wearing dredlocks, it's part of a physical description. Call it profiling if you like, but I asked a friend of mine, who is black and is a county sheriff here, if this was a legitimate part of the search for a criminal and said 'of course it is. Any and every part of the physical description is used when looking for someone'. If they were looking for fat white guys with gray hair and pulled me over I would be annoyed but not much else.

Heard an interesting report the other day on Mississippi Public Broadcasting (our APR stinks) about young black men spending their whole lives learning to 'blend in'. That the intimidation factor that most whites feel for large, strong -looking black men costs them jobs and secure futures for themselves and their families. I believe that it was Howard University that they said had their students dress in business clothes during their MBA days so that they would get accustomed to 'blending in' with their coworkers later on. I can feel for them somewhat. When I was 20 I had hair halfway down my back and a bushy long beard. I was also someone who would jog to open a door for an elderly person or offer to carry a heavy box for someone at the grocery. I actually had a woman shreik one time when I swooped up behind her to help her with her door. Perhaps it's not the same but it's similiar.

We are all judged in some way by the way that we look. We know that going in. People that are heavily tatoo'd are judged. White guys with shaved heads (maybe not you guys that are 'natural') are judged. Heavy people are considered lazy by many just because they are heavy. Anyway, you get the picture. Everyone judges and everyone is judged. It may piss people off with dreds that they are now a suspect because another person with dreds committed a crime, but it is a legitimate physical attribute of a criminal suspect.

One more thing since I seem to be in a typing mood: many of you guys like to pride yourself on your liberalism yet have zero tolerance for someone who was raised differently than you were or has different values. This red state/ blue state crap is stereotyping of the worst kind. Anyone from the south or the midwest is 'ignorant'? Anyone who would call someone 'ignorant' that they know only through a few opinions on a message board might be termed as ignorant, imo.

As far as Dan's beard goes, I have read where pirates used to tie ribbons and finger bones into their beards. Might be a real eye-catcher since the dredlock thing ain't going to work out.

I didn't say you were a troll. I would want to have a more thorough understanding of you before making that statement. My initial look at your past posts didn't show much activity in the "non-bilge" areas. The folks here are interested in wooden boats and are always interested in what people are doing with/to them.

Everyone here is entitled to their opions and should feel free to express them. As you can see from other posts this (the bilge) is somewhat of a "free for all". As long as your posts contibute to the free discussion of issues then you are welcome (far be it from me to say otherwise).

Lets see some pictures of the scow. What design is it? Lets get some activity above the bilge. The bilge is a nice place to visit but not such a nice place to live.

My comment was intentionally pointed, sure. That said, there's more evidence, in a broader spectrum of scientific disciplines for the "contemporary evolutionary synthesis" than for plate tectonics. The current understandings of evolution underlie most of the biological sciences ...

It's still a hypothesis, but frankly is one with far more empirical evidence supporting it than many other scientific theories which few raise eyebrows at when described as "fact."

I advise all my young friends to grow it as long, for as long, as they can. If I had known where mine was headed, you know I would have.
Reminds me of the young guy who shaved his head for 'the look'; then when he decided to let it grow back, he discovered he was bald. hehe
