Restoring an I.O.D.

A group of us get together every Wednesday night, as well as Saturday mornings during the winter months to work on various boat projects, but last summer this International One Design more or less fell into our laps from the San Francisco IOD fleet. "Either come down and get it, or we're going to cut it up", and since one of us in the group already has one, we thought it would be fun to do some match racing,....so, we brought it back to Orcas but first we'll have to replace that stem ......and as with most 70 year old wood boats, as we got into it, it was obvious that a complete restoration was in order, so we forged ahead. To date, I've built a new stem,
After tomorrow night, we'll have replaced 29 frames, only 67 to go Torn off the deck, rebuilt the transom framing, and started to replace the deck beams

When finished, every frame will have been replaced, completely re-fastened, new decks, new house, and looking for a new owner so we can get started on the next project. What the hell else would one do when living on an island

Good job! One question, though: were you able to remove the floors with a garden trowel?

Looks like a lot of work that will be worth it in the end. IODs sure are lovely boats.

lovely? IODs go way beyond lovely. They're the sexiest thing floating. Ever.

I'm fortunate enough to frequent a harbor that has a fleet of 6 or 8 IODs. A match race is poetry. A fleet race is a symphony.

They're hungry, though. $10-15k per year to keep one in competitive racing trim.
