Left on an island

This year I decided to give it a try and sailed to the danish Ox-islands to take the boat out on the very old slipway.

There once has been a prospering boatyard and they even build large 2-Mast boats, but those times are gone by and the new tenants of the island (friends of mine) are too busy running their "Island-Inn" to care much for the old boatyard.

But working there is a pure pleasure. Nobody bothers you, you can stay on the slipway as long as you like, beer and food is inclusive...

It is very cool and not just the photos. Its the whole atmosphere you've got going there Martin.
Being in Auckland," The city of sails" where classic boats are an unappreciated nuisance and under pressure from the sort of constant financial gouging thats becoming the norm for local body councils and businesses alike , well, it wears you down. I'm watching the yard I've hauled at for 25 years being " upgraded" Read: we're gonna quadruple your haulout rate and take you for every cent.
Neat atmosphere and a snapshot of values from the past. You're lucky.

Oh, I like your hatch. Our skylight works the same way.

I am afraid I have disappointed some people here, because I promised to sent RumRegatta Rum and Posters. I mailed the adresses to the Museumsharbour secretary to sent the stuff away, but somehow she either didn't get the mail, was confused or forgot about it.

I work far too much for the Museumharbour to take care of everything (currently it amounts to more than 20hrs a week - not paid - beside my own company), but I'll try to sent Rum and Posters this year. To anybody interessted - please send my an address!



This year I acted "autocratic" and decided to do the Poster motiv on my own. Last year I asked a fellow Museumharbour member and he did a pretty good drawing. Unfortunately, although I am a professional designer and know exactly how to get things printed he later complained about the colours, not realizing that in order to get images printed one has to lower one's sight...

Also I find the old boatyard appealing. I was recently in Appalachicola and I saw the waterfront there beginning to get "upgraded". One building had been razed the week before I went there.
I read about marinas being sold to developers up and down the East coast and find it particularly disturbing as it puts boating further out of reach for the person of average means.

Martin, that is pure magic. That last pic is post card stuff, wish we had a slip like that locally.

As JohnB states there is a marina going in by his usual haul out area and I'm sure he'll be looking further afield. Affraid it's not much better up the coast John.

That's a very nice boat indeed. What design is she?

Well she is a Uphams, Brixham design, The 1st out of 13 they did. The design is a back then very popular small-boat design that was orientated on boats like Flamouth Quay Punts, Harrison Butler...

All other boats out of that series I know of are bermuda-rigged, perhaps mine as the first one was gaff-rigged, perhaps it was gaff-rigged later on...
