Eun Mara Progress

Since a few people have been asking about progress, here's a link to photos of my Eun Mara project since the turning over. Earlier photos can be seen here.

We've had a cold, windy winter so I haven't been able to make much progress outside. I managed to get a little bit done on the nice days, and I did some inside work making sails from Sailrite kits (highly recommended, as long as you don't expect perfection!).

Tomorrow Steven Bauer is going to give me some hands on experience with gluing up a birdsmouth spar. Hopefully that will give me inspiration to get going on the eight spars required for the Eun Mara!

I've got the spruce all milled out, Howard. I just have to cut the birdsmouth and run the tapers on the table saw.
And, great pics! I love the blue. I'll be studying those pics closely, that's for sure.

HR . . . .Great photo essay! Very impressive! As someone building on a smaller scale, a 15'00" Ducktrap Wherry,
how many man hours does it take to build a boat like yours. How do you ever get enough heat up so the epoxy will harden?

Ocean Spray, I have spent about 1000 hours on the boat so far, over about a year and a half.

To keep the long epoxy joints (such as planks) warm enough to cure, I would hang heat lamps from the roof just above the joint. For smaller areas, I would build a "tent" overtop and put a small space heater inside. I did the glue up on sunny days late in the morning so that the boat had a chance to warm up in the plastic covered building. I also only epoxied when it wasn't too cold or windy. It seemed to worked well.

Very nice! Eun Mara is a beautiful small yacht. I'm currently halfway through an Acorn Dinghy, and hope to build Eun Mara one of these days. As a hobbiest with two small children, though, it's going to be awhile. I think a Whilly Boat is more likely in my near future.

Being fairly new the the Forum, this is the first time I've seen your Eun Mara. Congratulations and cudos for your work. This looks like a particularly satisfying build and you are clearly doing a spectacular job. It's an inspriration. Thanks for sharing it so well.

Lovely work. Lisa picked out that shade of blue for the Caledonia yawl. It didn't get used. I suppose I must build a boat and use the paint.

Wayne, I don't know about adoption - we're getting kinda full up with boats, but I guess there's always room for a beauty like Elisabeth Grace!

I'm away right now so I can't tell you how much plywood I used, but I'll post it when I get home. I know that I used less than Iain's plans call for because I was pretty careful about laying out the planks and minimizing waste (I scarphed each plank individually rather than scarphing full sheets).
