Help on Leeboards

Does anyone know how the leeboards for larger, 30-40' , boats were rigged;
bolt,chain or rope for the povit point? Or a source for such hardware?

As for your question, we'll need more info -- what design / nationality / era of 30-40' boat? As stated, the answers would be:
1. Yes, all of the above.
2. Any chandelry.

Looks like Phil Bolger is your man. Check out the Yahoo group on Bolger and you will likely get swamped with info on leeboards and attachment.

I ran out of Bolger books at 16 designs and I know there are several more 'Dovekie & Shearwater". He has a sizable number of larger/offshore leeboarders.

The Herreshoff hinge would probably require you have one of the many marine bronze foundries make you the parts but I suspect that the Bolger method is not as pretty/classy/elegant but can be fabricated/repaired and is much easier/cheaper.

Sensible Cruising Designs: Medowlark and Goldenball are leeboard vessels and the construction is DETAILED in the book. Both use an eyebolt that is free to pivot and a pin through the eye is strapped to the top of the board. This allows the board to pivot up and down in what you would think of as it's normal positions and also to flop outboard or "broken wing" when it is on the leeward side.

My only experiance with leeboards was when I rigged a canoe for sailing. They worked.

A centerboard trunk can be the 700 pound gorilla in a small boat. Remember the "Riddle of the Sands". Cruthers, or was it Davies, was always banging some part of his anatomy on the GD centerboard trunk.

Knight, who rigged a similiar P and O lifeboat as a small sailing yacht, used leeboards. Knight, the author of "Small Boat Sailing" and the "Alert in the Baltic" was the inspiration for "The Riddle of the Sands".
