Ive been offered the chance to make an offer on an old Jarrah planked fishing boat thats seen better days... the bloke that owns it is doing time and has run up a major bill at the heavy haulage mob were it landed a couple of years ago and where it now sits out the back amid threats of chainsaws and fires!

So the boat... I will go have a good gander on Friday arvo when the blokes available to walk me through it... anyway from what Ive seen of it... its on a jinker but will need shorin up and placing on a low bed truck trailer and subsequent pilot and police escort... these add considerable costs and subsquently lower the "value" price... its as I said Jarrah planked no expoxy no fibreglass and has been on the jinker for about 3 or so years... if it stays there it will be another 10 before the bloke gets out (make a quick buck sellin dope jerk that found out it doesnt work!)

I estimate from the views Ive had from the road shes about 30 - 35ft from stem to stern has seen someone make and install a dogbox on top which looks like shyte... the motors not there as I dont think theres much else but will have to wait till Friday

So what figure? I reckon if I offer about $500 - $1000 (to offset some of their storage costs?)and they transport it to my place... they are after all a heavy haulage company!!

If they dont like the price well... say la gare eh!

Dingo, This is proof that wooden boats are truley a disease with no real cure. Once ya got it, ya got it, but my advice, every time you drive by, admire the shape, but don't stop............

ssshhh! I went and had a gander this arvo!

Couldnt help meself... the young fella was ssooooo purswaysive I just had to go and clamber all over it... trouble was I didnt have a camera! DAMNIT!!

Anyway... the hull shape... same as the old Lugger style and probably built around the same time! 30-35ft length easy 12ft beam... 1inch Jarrah planked... has motor gearbox rudder prop big mutha bilge pump its all there... some need work like the motor that needs takin apart and cleaning down a new donk and a good goin over... but its all there! the young fella was stunned as we went over it to find what was there even he wasnt aware of some of it

On the down side... some git fibreglassed the hull at some stage and then this fella has ripped 90% of it off... exposing the rot Id estimate probably 90% of the planks have rot are split or otherwise buggared... no prob realy ive got more than enough 1in planks of Jarrah in the humpyhoochy to cover replacement... many have come away from the frames with the weather... most of the goop they used between planks is slimey white crud that just wipes out with your fingers... of the frames Id estimate around 60% have been sistered at some stage or other... the keel is shot well its holding its own for now but needs replacing splitting etc... the stempost is stuffed... funnily enough the transom looks okay no obvious rot or splitting

Now the deck... as I said its got this dogbox on top... that was wrong... these old fishing boats have HIGH bulwarks and usually have a small cabin with bunk wheelhouse sorta thing this ones been taken out to the bulwarks and built up from there... seems to me he had some plans of makin her into a live aboard at some stage but lost the plot... that will have to go

Im guessing if they agree that my offer will be... for them to bring it around and park it in the humpyhoochy... thats it my best offer!

I think Id start by taking the lines from her hull to begin with... just in case of an all out flopdown of the hull

Then Id take the house off in total... then deck wich is buggared ply over carlins covered in fibreglass which has accepted water ingress... then rip the motor gearbox hydrolics out... in general gut her

Then I would go from one end to the other taking all the accumulated goop paint googe and gunk off the timbers and seeing just what is what down there... find new keel timbers to replace the ones on her

Patterns would have to be made so the planks can be replaced

Somehow I think they will take the offer... I havent made it yet Ive simply told the young fella that he needs to go have a good hard long honest talk with the bloke who owns it and find out what it is he wants... I think due to his situation (in the slammer) he may well have a different perspective on the condition of her than the reality is so maybe he wont take it...

If he does then I will have a 30 - 35ft fishing boat in the humpy to keep me going... and if he does I pwomiz to take pics!!

If he doesnt I wont!

Careful mate, careful. Think of a worse-case scenario and how you'd cope, like what does SWMBO say, is a big bonfire allowed in my area if it all ends in tears, how much is a mooring, how much fuel will it use??
'Course this will probably make no difference at all, but do you need something quite so big??

1) Im being careful mate and the beauty of this is I really dont care! I know its a mountain of work if its ever to get anywhere near the water again... Im not going to be paying one cent to purchase it since I know its gonna be a major hole in the wallet for some time to come... but mostly I really am not bothered at all if I dont get it or even if I do

2) Worst case scenario? Well the worst I can think of right now is that they will hook the truck to the jinker and head down the road toward Brunswick and hit a bump or have to slam on the breaks and the whole shootin match will slip slid and end up a mass of splinters and toothpicks on the side of the road

3) Possumpoop when told simply did what she always does when I mention boats... rolled her eyes and changed the subject!

4) Bonfires at present arent allowed wrong time of year ol bean... but a few months from now no probs

5) Moorings?... mmmmm now this could be a real prob since the mooring fees at Bunbury are apparently pretty damnably high... but I havent looked into it yet and thats a fair way down the track to be considering at this time

6) Fuel costs?... mmm well the motor presently in it is a bloody ballburster of a V8 I believe but as it stands that doesnt work too good right now if at all which I doubt so I will have time to decide on motors as time moves along... how much fuel will it take to run her? GAWD KNOWS!!

7) Do I NEED something so big?... of course not! gawd life would be rather boring if we only got those things we NEED and stayed within the bounds of logic eh?

8) Makes no difference at all? Well now you know I respect you and what your thoughts are mate... but heck it doesnt make one iota of difference at this stage ol mate!! since Ive not heard the bloke that owns its answer yet... it may all be rather academic in the end anyways then this whole thread makes no difference at all eh!!

Ive become somwhat of a realist of late... and take my lookin at boats very seriously however that bein said you know as well as I know mate that Im rather addicted and as such have been known to get a tad emotional at times... so we will see eh!

G'day Dingo. Forget it mate, last thing you need. It'll cost more money, and take more time, than starting from scratch, will never be as good as one you've built yourself, and isn't really what you want anyway. And if you can't afford to buy a similar boat in fair condition, then you can't afford to fix up this one. She may look nice in a distant romantic kind of a way, but she's shot to hell and best used as firewood. If you've got a heap of jarrah, why not build something out of that? Maybe a something a little smaller, say 23-25 feet, gaff rigged, full keel, carvel, easily handled by one, but capable of taking 3 or 4 away for a weekend. Might take maybe 4 or 5 years to build on yer lonesome? Cheers mate. Phil.

Shane, in the last few months I have been offered and been tempted by 2 almost free boats. They would have been many years and lots of money. But I wanted them. But I now have nearly recovered. There should be help groups for us. I fish out of a Simmons 18 that I built, have wanted something with a cabin for shelter for years. Kept looking at other boats and plans with envy. Last week I went fishing in a half cabin plastic boat, it was ****house. Cant cast with cabin in the way, can only fish out of half of the boat and handled like a bitch. Feel much better now. You will too. Resist Shane, resist.
