It's a couple of months away for me so how about a bit of a run down on it. whats different?

The all wood "boat hook" is a one inch square piece of ash with what looks to be a 1/2" dowel through drilled at an angle on one end. A little carving around the dowel forms the hook and a little more around the tip forms the point. Simple but I wonder how sturdy it is. I'll find out one of these days.

It won't be square, but if you go down to a sizable hardware store, Ace for sure, possible Home Depot, you can buy a nicely turned( Expect for the last 12" or so), selcet straight-grained ash replacement handle for a post hole digger, about six and a half feet long for about $12.00. Makes a beautiful boat hook with the $15.00 ABI branze cast hook from Jamestown distributers. Got one on my catboat.

Mike Field will have a conniption fit when he sees this.LOL. What? no bronze hook... no sennett work, the turks head.....? will it float handle protruding up a foot or so?

Sure, you can fancy it up. The designer suggests putting weight in the handel, so it floats hook end up.

I don't know, somehow the wooden boathook looked sort of clunky to me -- I think I prefer the look of a bronze hook on a wood shaft.

Ash should be available from virtually any US lumber yard that carries hardwoods (aside from the places like the Orange Box that just carry maple, oak and poplar if they carry any hardwoods at all).
