I really don't know what's the matter with the Forum these days, you lot should be ashamed of yourselves. Here is a really nice and extremely interesting photo of a load of gorgeous wooden boats, posted on Tuesday, and so far only ONE reply?
How about some stuff on the lines of -
In the foreground we seem to have carvel pulling boats, around 15 to 16 feet - notice they have thole pins rather than rowlocks. The style of finish is nice - varnished sheerstrakes, painted inside in blue or green. We assuime these are some sort of small inshore workboat - are they antiques or still being built locally? And in the background we can see one clinker boat, but this form of construction is definitely in the minority. Nice photo, JD

Anyone else notice the pins used as rowlocks? I wonder how that works.

Is that lee boards on the one in the back right? Scott would the oar have a hole in it that you could slip that pin through?

The single thole pin was used 2 ways. In one technique, the oar has a hole that fits down over the pin. In the other, the oar is held fast to the pin with a grommet of rope.

well spotted but I don't think they are leeboards. Just the bottom boards pulled up to bail and air the bilge. Thole pins are very common on the older punts on the Fal, but they are always double pins with oar lying in between them like a rowlock.

Has anybody noticed what looks like trimming ballast in the foreground boat ? Stones or is it natural sponges ?
