So - Has anyone clicked here yet?
Digital WoodenBoat

Does this mean that WB has contracted with their writers/etc. So that from this issue forward - they could produce a CD library?

Kind of neat - the menu bar doesn't render very well in the Mozilla browser.

I'm sure they won't be giving them all away though...

Good question but that would be great. I'd buy one.

It just isn't the same. You can't read it on the john! Actually, as I recall, there was once talk of, or actually existed, a CD version of all the back issues up to a certain point.

I guess it's time to get a laptop for 'the reading room'.

There actually was a CD set of all the back issues. They had to withdraw it from the market because they had not secured all the necessary rights from the original authors and it was thought to be too much effort and/or cost too much to get them.

I hate reading stuff on a computer. Heck, I have a hard time getting through some of the long winded posts on this board. I sure don't want to read a mag that way.

I'm not going to subscribe to anything online that is as slow loading as that.

I agree - reading on line is difficult.

Having searchable content on a CD - that is useful.

I believe that Joe (CSOH) has designed and built a prototype computer station for just this sort of application...

I have the multiple CD set. It was done as PDF files. Not very searchable. It was withdrawn I believe when the copyright issue became known with the judgement against National Geo. Just this year the Supreme Court has ruled in favor of National Geo so WB can go back and digitize its back issues.

There were some interface issues with the CD set. Would make sense to me to do a DVD set, much more compact and searchable.

It will not cut into back issue sales as the resolutions was not great.

I wouldn't try a readin' laptop, but WB certainly stores better on the back of the loo than Sailing magazine does.... Sailing is too large to leave the seat up... like everyone here does, I assume!

Britanica the best known of the 18ft'ers? ... I thought Yendy's was. I'd best finish reading the article to find out how come a replica ... has a carbon fibre spinnaker pole?

... but before that, I'd like to know how to turn pages just to keep the continuity (I'm losing interest fast), without having to go back to the page's page index each time ... maybe it is just me.

There needs to be a turn to the next page tab.

A W E S O M E ! ! !

Ohhhh, just a couple of steps: capture page-by-page, convert to PDF and presto: you can have Adobe read out your WoodenBoat magazine for you...

What's so cool about a free digital WB? You DO subscribe to the hard copy, don't you?

Yes, I do: 905849.

But this means each issue will also be searchable, editable, you can add notes, paperclips etc. without affecting the original publication. I do read articles and even books from my computer screen. Heck, I even keep an old Apple PowerBook Duo 230 for exactly this purpose (for example Voyager Expanded books).

No, it's not "WoodenBoat" but we have two magazines online for free:

1) The german sailing magazine "Yacht" from 1904 to 1959 for free (!) including fulltext search. About 60.000 pags available at
http://www.fky.org/prestodata/search...o&language=eng

2) The eastern germany sailing magazine "Segelsport" from 1953 to 1990 at
http://www.fky.org/prestodata/search...fig=segelsport
About 10.000 pages for free

We did all the work for the www.yachtsportarchiv.de where you can find a lot of more books, databases etc.

We have scanned all 170.000 pages of "Yacht" (1904 to 2004) but due to copyright problems we are only allowed to publish the pages up to 1959. At the moment we are programming a shop system for the 300 DPI-high-resolution scans so you can get line drawings in a better quality.

Sorry for beeing it german only but we did tanslate the navigation to english.
