Yachting magazine?

Someone dumped a years worth of Yachting magazines on me this week.Haven't seen this mag in years. When did it turn into a rag for high end stinkpots? Now their in the dumpster.

I think Yachting took its dive when Spun Yarn passed from the lee of his long boat and over the bar.

The one edition of "Yaachting" was brilliant.

Back when Alf Loomis and H.A. Calahan wrote for Yachting, it turned out some great issues.

I just recieved some new 1939 issues of Yachting and it really was an exceptional publication back then. The present rag clearly shows the dumbing down of America as well as the total lack of taste of those who read the drivel inside. True Yachtsmen don't read this new computor generated crap, it's now for "boaters".
(and by the way - a 'boater' is a HAT!)

I found four years of Yachting...bound...at the dump...really great condition...1928-32...If I remember correctly.
I gave it to the guy who had everything...my father...as he did not have those issues...
What amazed me were the ads...even during the depression...
They were really unbelieveable to look at...

FWIW: Yachting was "repositioned" about the time it was sold to Time Warner about four years ago.

I also have a bunch Of Yachting Magazines from the WW II era, great reading. Today's is basicly a thick, glossy sales brochure for plastic playtoys of the mega-rich. Garbage, a waste of trees.

Anyone remember Skipper magazine. I believe it was published out of Baltimore. Still have a few copies.

I still read (besides WB!) Sailing. I'm amazed that a full-size magazine with photos that beautiful can still be produced for an annual subscription of $14.95 Say what you will about the plastic boats built by the French or Hunter Marine, the ads pay for a great mag.

The current issue has an article on 'finishing fibre glass', and have you done the 100 question sailing IQ test.

I concur that Sailing is about the best of the modern oriented sailing magazines remaining. The large format and the full page photos are a pretty good combination. Every once in a while Perry will review a more traditional or at least non-mainstream design, and they regularly look at older (albeit fiberglass) designs. A yearly issue devoted to small boats and occasional coverage of trailer sailers rounds it out for me.
