So WB does a really nice article on the P class yacht JOYANT and tells us the owner prefers to remain anon. And yet I read about the same boat in the NOV issue of SAILING and it's a pretty good article, good boat porn!!! and tells me the owner is.......Dr. Bob McNeil a venture capitalist and owner of ZEPHYRUS the waterballast turbosled. (Means it goes real fast for the unfamilar!)
So there you have it, although still can't figure out why it was okay to put his name in one article and not the other since they came out at the same time, not like he had gotten some bad publicity from one of the articles and declined for the other one....

Anybody else notice that the name the owner insisted on carving into the transom himself appears to be upside down? Either that, or the transom in the picture was just propped up for convienience before being installed?

Some times it works like this. I can't say it was this way in this case.

Picture agencies don't just sell pictures, they can also sell articles with pictures.

If you saw the article on the Australian Dingo in Geo, a few years back, which Geo did you see?

The first time the article was published in Australian Geo, the fee was expensive. When the article was sold to let's say German Geo, it was cheeper, but had to have a few changes. When it was sold to other Geos it was cheeper still, and had further changes. This article was sold to a swag of Geos, all with slight changes.

ps, Is every article in Wooden Boat, the 'first time' the article has been published?

Magazines are free to write articles or buy articles about subjects that are "news", and they don't have to pay the subject of the article or get his permission. Time magazine will run lots of articles on the snipers, with photos, but they won't need the snipers' permission.

WoodenBoat obviously worked with the owner in producing the article and honored the owner's wishes. It is possible that Sail treated the subject as "news" and simply published the story without bothering to get the owner's permission. I haven't read the Sail article; am I off base?

Actually is is SAILING magazine a much better publication than SAIL and they quite obviously had the owners cooperation...

It is also possible that Sail purchased the article from an picture agency. When I was with Auscape International here in Oz, they were after articles, more than just the photos.
