Those in the Portland, ME area may be interested in taking a look at Ocean Planet, an entrant in the Vendee Globe, solo-nonstop-around-the-world race. It's a wooden boat, though it may not meet every purist's standards for calling it a wooden boat. It sounds like it's got some pretty radical design ideas, like an unstayed mast on a 60' ocean racer.
If you're interested, it's outside Portland Yacht Services, near the Eastern Promenade. It'll be launched tomorrow (7/13/04) at high tide, with much fanfare and speech-making.
You may have seen Ocean Planet advertised in our host magazine's pages.
Thought you might like to know.

I'm reading a book, Godforsaken Sea, by derek Lundy about the 96-97 vendee globe.

Ummm... get down there and pray for that boat, and her brave skipper, whether you're religious or not, for he intends to dance with the debbil!
