An Omega 18 with 7 people on board suddenly caught fire. We were about 8 miles away and could see the colum of smoke which looked pretty bad.
Lucky for the people on board some good folks nearby
saved the day for them but not the boat.
See www.ktuu.com for photos and some other details.

    What do you suppose happened?

An undetected fuel leak into the bilge?

They're unusually lucky that no one was hurt.

Alan, not sure if we will ever know for sure as there isn't much if anything left of the boat. We watched the smoke for nearly an hour and knew by the radio that everyone was ok. I'm not familiar with the Omega but I'm guessing that it must have had a gasoline motor.. They said they heard a loud noise and and a sudden stoppage which kinda sounds like a fuel explosion but again I don't know the layout of that boat. Whatever the reason , they are very lucky that someone was nearby. The waters there will take your breath away real quick.
