Anyone recognise this big gaff cutter(Fife ,I think).

It has the most amazing marconi rig(The first marconis were gaff rigged) with what looks like a socketed topmast. She's moored up beside Shamrock at the maritime museum. I can find out . Just haven't got around to it yet.She flies an eclipsed moon as pennant. Took the first photo on Friday night and the second sat morning when we went out for the weekend.


Talk about gaff rig city. The dang things are breeding around here.
Rona (the GL Watson)has arrived up from Nelson, Gloriana 1892 has come down from the Bay Of Islands and was out sailing with Jessie Logan 1886 on Sunday. I went for a quick sail alongside JL and Gloriana but got out of the way because they were getting photos taken.( so I discovered)

John, do get a closer look at that Marconi topmast! I have never seen anything like it - does the sail set on leaders, or is it a luff groove job like a Dyarchy topsail?

Well it turns out to be MOONBEAM I'm told.I still haven't got a close up look myself. Problem is ... my Pace Fife book has a MOONBEAM in it but it just ain't that boat. Both have that wholesome look as opposed to outright racer look but even with the rig differences the hulls look different to me from what I can see.

SO! how many MOONBEAMS are there out there circa 1900 to say 1928. about 80ft.

Mate, you want to see the poor old girl( Waione I mean). she's loaded down to her waterline with boogie boards, grog, food, dinghies,fuel and water. All we need is another week and some good weather. Then we'll wallow off and work can take a flying leap at itself for a few weeks. I'll be raising a glass to you for sure.

Actually Brian this one I have up today cause I need a bit of a giggle... I believe its JoeBoy on the mountin on the hudsons place that sure looks like his dawg! ... and the thought of JoeBoy sittin on his mountin in all that cold stuff just blows me away!! ...Why you ask? well its SERIASSLY HOT down here today!! sweat has been flowin all morning... not a breathe of breeze to be found.. even the birds are all taking shelter in the birdbath fighting and cackling at each other... 28s Galahs Cockatoos Kookaburras and a mob of magpies... under the trees along with the resident blue tongue a multitude of skinks and other crawling critters... so Im sittin in the 2nd coolest area of the house {number 1 slot is the bathroom} thankfull for bein able to snort and snortle at that white stuff and cold over there!... so check it out looks like some of them postcards you get from Europe... wheres the santa? snowman? gawd that looks flamin cold!!

We came across it at kawau a couple of weeks ago. About 7.am as we were leaving for GT Barrier Island .Moonbeam it is ,but not the one in the Fife book by my opinion.Much racier.

I'm embarrased to say I had the data all the time.
Uffa Fox Sailing and Seamanship has 2 pages on her including lines , history and accomodation plans.
She's the last of the Moonbeams, Fife, launched in 1914 but not commisioned till after the war in 1920. 95' long 66' waterline.I took this about 2 hours after the start of our thursday race when she came through sailing about 15 degrees lower than us.

She's astonishingly beautiful but for one reason or another can't sail to windward to save herself. After 28 miles she was nearly out of sight behind us.

unbelievable.Just plain should not happen.
