Mrs. Santa brought me a dandy new scanner for Christmas which does a reasonable job on 35mm slides. So here for the enjoyment of all are the pictures I took at the WoodenBoat Show at South Harbor Maine, 1994.

Well okay the pictures are a bit under exposed and a little to much contrast but I was running on automatic. Once I learn to do it right....

Thanks, Norm. I was at the show that year. It's nice to see the Harry Bryan boats. The shot of the fin drive looks just like the one on my Thistle.

What scanner is that you got ?

I'd like to transfer thousands of 35 mm transparencies into the computer and post a few. After three attempts, all failures, couldnt get any of them to work.
The last one was a dedicated 35 mm scanner from "Pacific image", never worked even after trying two of them.

JD, it is an Epson "Perfection 1660 Photo" which will take four 2x2 slides or a film strip of 6, at a time. I timed what it took to do four slides on the automatic setting, just under nine minutes, so it is not the machine to do thousands of slides. Fifty is more than I could do in an evening if they need to be corrected.

The 2400 or 2450, for about twice the price, is said to be faster, and would give more pixels per inch. This may be about as good as one can do on 35mm with a flat bed scanner.

I made a 4x6 print from a scanned color negative and found it to be quite satisfactory. A print from a slide was sharp enough but I did not work over the color, contrast and density so it could be made much better. Scanned B&W negs looked pretty good too.

There is an optional attachment for scanning larger transparencies and negs but I've not checked it out.

The images I put in the Wooden Boat Show, 94 album are exactly what the scanner decided it should do on automatic so look at the .orig.jpg version to judge.

For $160 I'm quite pleased with the quality.

Well.... That'd only take about 60 hours. Now that would be an exciting week. On the other hand, I already lead such an exciting life that I might consider doing a few for anyone here that isn't interested in professional quality and is too cheap to pay for same. No charge for boats, babies or nekid babes.

Thanks Norm for you detailed info on the scanner.

I'll have to look into it. Can't see all those old slides just sitting their wasting away. Can always clutter up some space here with them.
