Is anyone here in or around the SanDiego area? I'd love to chat..... I have a young Marine near there who'd love to learn to sail...maybe do some crewing....

It doesn't have to be on wood boats.

SHE is at Miramar Marine Air Station. My daughter Megs. She would love to learn to sail.....catamarans, crewing on boats, whatever. She just wants to get on the water every now and then. She'd like to row too (she is an experienced sculler.....she had a scholarship offer), but she' not had much luck in getting hold of anyone out there. She just got there and hasn't gotten a vehicle yet..... hopefully that little issue will be remedied soon.

My pardon if you please for the gender goof!

If she is at the old Top Gun School base she can take the bus down to either Harbor Island or Shelter Island or there are several spots that rent small sailing craft on Mission Bay.

Contact me off line and I will give you my phone # and perhaps I can give her a brief guided tour of down here.

She would be welcome anytime if sailtraining without winches or spinnakers, but with a brain interests her. We are currently sailing the waters nearby, (San Diego to the Channel Islands). We are always open to newbies, as long as they aren't looking for 'just a ride'..'Tis why they made ferries, eh?..Just your struggling little 501(C)3.......Gary

Ah, and it's too bad I'm in Newport... but Marines take care of their own...

Re: sail training... MWR (Morale, Welfare & Recreation) at Camp Pendleton has a very good US Sailing Sail Training program. And the cost for the program is beyond reasonable! There should be a Miramar to Pendleton shuttle, if not, the Coaster will get to Oceanside, and it's not a long walk from the station to Del Mar... that is Camp Del Mar, where the Del Mar Marina is, not Del Mar CA, which is something else entirely!

In any case, once there, all she need do is tell someone in the class what she did to get there, and because Marines take care of their own... I'm sure she'll have free rides from that point forward.

Once that's accomplished, there is always someone in San Diego or Oceanside looking for crew...

Also, if she can get a hold of Santana, aka the So Cal Sailing Rag, she should be able to get on the crew list there...

If I can get back to Insane Diego after we leave here in Newport, we'll get her on the 8... failing that, there are other ways. MWR has all kinds of shuttles, buses, tours, etc. that will get her to either Diego or Oceanside... and once you're on the first boat, well, there you are!

Also, remind her to thank the Good Lord she's not at Twentynine Palms. Trust me, the sailing in Lake Bandini is not something to look forward to!

Thumbs up

Garland, had a very enjoyable 1/2 day with Megan.
Charming young lady with lots of pluck.

We cruised San Diego from MiraMar to Coronado.
Hitting every one of the bases to check on the sailing opportunities.

Unfortunately it was a bad choice of days. Most all were closed due to Columbus Day holiday, sigh.

We struck some paydirt at the Military yachit club in Coronado though. If she can get a car they are offering a day long how to sail course in a week or so.

Got her outfitted with a handful of AAA maps of San Diego and SD County and a copy of Hand Reef and Steer.

Plan on getting together when SWIMPAL and I get back from trip up to NoCal.

Dave,
I spoke with Megs last night. She had a very nice time, and she seemed excited about getting together with you and your lovely bride soon. I am going to go have a look at a little old vehicle for her today.....hopefully it will be suitable for her needs, and we can get it to her in the very near future.

And yes, Megs is charming......and she definitely has "pluck". No fear in that kid, it seems. It's been a tough road the last few years for her. I am so proud of her.

Anyway.......your hospitality is very appreciated.
