August in Maine?

My bride announced to me that she has bought airline tickets for a trip to Maine in late August. I think she is intending that I go along on this trip.

All I know for sure is that we'll be flying to Portland, driving to Ellsworth and then maybe on to Corea. Friends there have a place near Corea they'll let us use for a couple of days.

I expect we'll go to Acadia and I would like to see the WB school and whatever else there is to see in Brooklin.

What else? I imagine we'll stay in Corea a couple of days and then work our way down the coast back to Portland.

Southwest Harbor--Ralph Stanley Land? I'd like to see some other wooden boat related stuff and maybe meet a forumite or two or three.

I'd like to go out to Monhegan Is. but we'll have our little guy along and he'll only be 3 1/2 months old so I don't know about that.

Well, I'd appreciate some ideas. Thanks.

I took my son to Monhegan when he was about 1 year old. Babe's in arms are more adaptable than most. Do it. Stay overnight on the island if you can.

I'm in Wells BTW, right between the dubious pleasures of Ogunquit and Kennebunkport, so if swmbo needs beaches and touristy things, I'm the one to see.

If the timing works out I'll take you for a sail. And don't forget, Palawan and Schooner Bagheera do day sails out of Portland. If you stay in Portland I can tell you where to eat and stuff. If you come over I'll show you the boat projects, the house projects, the yard projects....And we can drink beer and play some table tennis.

Hamilton Marine in Searsport has a nice staff and a good selection, if a chandlery is of interest. Decent bookshelf the last time I visited.

Leave about double expected time on Rt. one that time of year. The bridges tend to back up, and I don't know what they're doing to the Hancock bridge at Bucksport this summer. I think nothing, but last summer it was a real bottleneck.

If you find yourself east of the Belfast bridge and hungry check out a rather nice, if a bit beat, Tai restaurant NE of the bridge to Belfast, on the NW side of the road. A decent curry or Pad Tai that won't break the bank, and very nice people. Inside a mile of the bridge.

P.S. In Stockton Springs, on the east side of the road, there is a restaurant, "Sue's Place", maybe??, that had an ongoing special of all you could eat fried haddock, if that's of appeal. About five bucks, fries and coleslaw, and endless dose of fried fish, lunch only.

I must be hungry.

Well, if you're going to have Thai food, you must go to the Bangkok in Ellsworth. It's the best I've had anywhere. I highly recommend the satays, fresh spring rolls, pad thai and green chicken curry. Don't forget the homemade coconut ice cream for dessert!

My husband's family has a summer home in Blue Hill. We are there every August. It's on your way to Brooklin. There are some nice shops your wife will enjoy. You can have a great lunch at Jean Paul's Bistro. Don't forget to visit the reversing falls.

You'll be driving through Searsport, location of Penobscot Marine Museum. We have about as many boats on display as they have at Maine Maritime. Some good Buttersworth Salmon paintings and a bunch of stuff on Downeasters. If you want to find out about Lobsters and the industry as it is now, we have a temporary show up; complements nicely the Maine Maritime Museum exhibit on same topic.

I'd get to Corea and stay put.
MDI is a nice place to go but the road from Ellsworth to the MDI in late August can be brutal traffic and the island is overrun w/turists.
Ralph's shop is a great stop (I lived across the street for a couple of years). For a secret taste of island flora and majestic scenery look for Hunter's beach and brook near Otter Creek and hike in there.
I'd join with Steve to meet up with you but I'm planning to be on Victoria for August with my 6 year old, probably getting as far East as North Haven. I want to swing in through the big rivers up to Merrymeeting Bay which might take a week or two so I'm thinking Winter Harbor/ Corea is a ways further than I expect to get. Otherwise, I'd make the effort to get you folks on board.

Getting to Monhegan would be a poke but it's one of those places like Chimney Pond that requires a visit once in this life time. Though the same could be said for Corea.
I'll bet $20.00 that you will ponder a way to move here at least three times.

If you want to see lots of beautiful wooden boats, don't miss Center Harbor in Brooklin - don't forget your camera. Brooklin Boat Yard overlooks this harbor and you may be able to get the nickel tour from Steve White if you let him know you're coming.
