the abaco thread prompts me to ask a question. a couple of years ago, on the northwest end of guana cay, i found a big ball of some sort of pliable, clear, sweet-smelling soft waxlike stuff while beachcombing. my first thought was that it might be ambergris, but i couldn't find a good enough description of it in any sources. i asked haziel albury, patriarch of man-o-war and local historian, if anyone ever found ambergris on the beaches in the past and he insisted that it had happened from time to time.
now, i've got a two pound ball of this stuff, brought through customs though i'm told it's illegal. some friends have even told me it's illegal to have the stuff, if it is indeed ambergris.
any cetologists out there who can tell me what ambergris looks, feels and smells like? what's it worth, if anything? is it illegal to have it in my possession?
