George Carlin put it pretty succintly thirty years ago. "Values is what you'll do for money, and what you'll do with money."

It's, of course, as with all such summations, a simplification. Abortion, for example, doesn't fit in the economy. But it is a very American statement that rings true, in a Vegas sorta way. It is an epitome of materialistic philosophy.

What do you value? People claim to value people, others, children, community etc. But what rings your value bell?

Me? I value genuine quiet. I value the man or woman in the gutter who's never known quiet. I value genuine friendship. I value a good roof. I value food in the fridge, and pure water to drink. I value a sail full of wind.

Maybe a better word is grateful. We who are so rich aren't grateful enough. I could be grateful with just the roof, some food, and clean water. So many of our brothers and sisters don't have them.

Praise God, this is a miraculous place!

I value knowing that I don't have to wake up every morning puking in the toilet anymore.

Hard to follow the topic in that jumble.
I'm certain Katherine will be by soon to straighten me out (see the viagra thread). It's almost getting to be that we need subtitles but an interpreter will do.

Sorry you can't follow it Chris. Mike seems on track, if in his usual toilet mode. Brain damage?

The term 'values' has become so overused, or used as code, that it's become worthless as far as I'm concerned.

I think the word 'virtues' fits what many people mean most of the time. Jesus had 'values'(teaching forbearance)... but then so did Hitler (exterminating Jews).
I have a hard time ascribing virtues to Hitler, but none identifying Jesus's.

Correct rbgarr, but everyone seems a bit touchy tonight.
