My brother turns sixty in three weeks. He's got advanced degrees in French history and library science. I'd like to buy him a special book for his birthday.

He's also a boat person, interested in most any good writing, but particularly history. S.E. Morrison's work sounds right up his alley, but I'm not prepared to buy fifteen volumes. Is there a shorter work by him people could recommend? Or...?

How about "25 Centuries of Sea Warfare" by Jacques Mordal? Maybe not on par with S E Morrison, but still good. Perhaps you can find a French edition.

What about one of the other magazines published by WooodenBoat, they are both French I believe:

La Chase Marie and Maritime Life and Traditions.
