You know it, I know it, but so far I don't think that there has been a public outrage. There ought to be. The erasers on a large percentage of pencils do not erase! Even the line made by the pencil that it is attached to! This is unacceptable! Revolt! The pencil eraser revolution is now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Soft and pliable, always give smudge free erasures.

I say revolt and no longer but pencils with erasers on them, instead buy Rapidomatic mechanical pencils and Pink Pearl erasers.

This scandal is far more insidious than you have noted.

Pencils have shown up in this office demonstrating a noticeably inferior stiffness level.

Close examination reveals that the shaft of these pencils are not wood, but rather some sort of polymer!

    Truly disgusting, it is.

They make for an especially poor choice for use in a pencil fight. I usually opt for a Ticonderoga myself.

If I were Alan Hyde, I would recommend that you read "The Pencil," by Henry Petroski. 600 pages of the fascinating (really!) story of pencils.

    But I won't.

(No offense intended, Alan, just gentle teasing.)

Pink Pearls are great for cleaning the contacts of low voltage electronic devices. When my cordless phone won't charge the battery, out comes the Pink Pearl. I erase the contacts on both sides, and soon it's charging sweet again.

Recently I amazed my sister-in-law (who thinks me rather stupid) with this trick.

Do you remember the old saw "Never draw more than you can erase in a day"? Well, I've gone through more than my fair share of Pink Pearls and really nothing compares.

Pink is for sissies. Real men use Staedtler-Mars:

And for those of us who dare to risk making really big boo-boos, there is the Koh-I-Nor electric eraser...

number 2 wooden pencils should be banned...they are quite deadly weapons in the wrong hands.

IMHO, there's only one wooden pencil worth owning; the Faber-Castell E-Motion:

    <img src= "http://www.pluto.dti.ne.jp/~sprg/ybksf/zpv990909a.gif">

It's eraser, by the way, will effectively erase it's line, even from wood, although I must admit I seldom make mistakes.

Every shop should have one of these:

The papermate execs believe that if the eraser on the pencil doesn't work, you'll be in the market for a Pink Pearl.

ive got the sharpener part but don't have the nifty little housing part that catches all your shavings... so I have a good size pile of pencil lead and wood dust on the floor (not that you can tell it from the rest of the mess)

    I'll second Staedtler-Mars vinyl erasers.

And I'm happy with my battery-powered erasing machine that I found at the local university bookstore. Not as nice as the Koh-I-Nor or the Staedtler-Mars machines, but at $15 instead of near $100, a much better deal.

My grade 11 drafting teacher chewed us out out and deducted marks for using erasers that left pink evidence.
I generally use a scraper or sander nowadays.

Staedler HB.9mm mechanical or 2H Papermate Mirado Classic for pencils.

Now how can all the employees at the nonfunctional eraser factory sleep at night? How can the sales reps look themselves in the mirror? They must know, they must! Where do these things come from? Should we blame it on the Chinese, like everything else that's going wrong lately?

So? Complain to somebody in China!

Speaking as a skilled pencil and ink Draftsman (can do CAD, too; but it's not the same) I'll go with mmd's choice, Stadtler.

If the one Donn's touting is white, it just a Stadtler knockoff.

I carry a retractabe Stadtler white vinyl eraser around in my briefcase, and use it frequently instead of wasting my time with the erasers that come on the back end of pencils.

Pink Pearl is OK for school children, but they were almost totally replaced by Stadtler's white vinyl prior to CAD eliminating pencils altogether.
