Elisabeth Grace has landed...

...LAND being the appropriate word. Elisabeth Grace hasn't gotten her bottom wet.

John and Charlotte Anderson drove from St. Andrews, New Brunswick, Canada to New Orleans, Louisiana, U.S.A. towing Elisabeth Grace. They arrived last Saturday. Here is what they brought...

Oh, even though I haven't launched her yet, I am very very pleased with the boat.

Elisabeth Grace is a Caledonia yawl designed by Iain Oughtred.

Hope you treated the couple to a big "Erster" fest and plenty of Bigknees ( oh them doughnutty thing a ma bobs ).

That's me laughing so hard I can't type. At first glance, Bigknees didn't ring a bell. Yep, we sure did. Only it was "all you can eat" fried shrimp at Salvo's in Belle Chasse followed by a trip to Cafe Du Monde for some real coffee (Starbucks, eat your heart out) and a pile of BEIGNETS. Finest kind! The company and the boat.

But seriously, I do feel blessed to have met John Anderson at the WoodenBoat Show in July, 2002. John and his family have lived with and by boats for generations. From Norway to Wood Island, Grand Manan Island and now St. Andrews. How many people do you know holy stoned the deck of a herring hauler as a child? John did on his Uncle's boat.

reddog: John Anderson was 50% of the faculty of the former boatbuilding school in St. Andrews. I think John said that Arno Day's son was the other half of the faculty. What a bone head short sighted Government cut back that was! Now the Maritimes are crying for qualified boatbuilders.

One more thing. John's shop is across the river from John Gardner's family farm. I feel like Elisabeth Grace was built in the right place by the right man. She has good genes and good spirits in her!

Then you certainly did luck out with John.I agree that the closure of that programme was very short sighted.
The same thing happened to the boatbuilding course they formerly ran at the Community College in Bridgewater.It was highly regarded for turning out skilled boat mechanics,(read boatbuilders).The instructor,Mr. Nelson Cutler,was truely amazing having worked in yards in his native England and the States.I consider myself fortunate to have spent a year there before it got the proverbial axe.Interestingly enough they are now making noises about reinstating that or a modified programme for the Lunenburg/South Shore area.

Not a binnacle as such. The compass is a Ritchie flush mount. John built a box to house it. The box fits across the thwart. It slides the full length of the thwart. I can move the compass so I can see it well on either tack.

The builder make a huge mistake.
There was a fold in the plans and he built it with two front ends!
Unless of course, you've got a split personality and asked for it that way.

Looks lovely Wayne. The name works well. I've got the beer cold, waiting for that first sail.

Mistake? Folded plans?

No worries, mate. My terminal case of doubleenderitis took over my brain the day I bought the plans. My Cajun buddies still can't believe I paid good money for a non-bass boat or a boat that won't pull a shrimp trawl. Then they say it's too pretty to use. I need to knock the new off her real soon.

Cold beer you say? Sounds good. Lisa bought beer for the launching. I bought beer for the launching. Then we both bought beer...the fridge is full of cold beer and no launching yet.

Richard, keep me posted in your Tender Behind progress. Can the transoms be made out of 1/2" plywood?

Nope, don't think so. When the time draws near, I'll rely on you guys to point me to the good places. Good sailing places & good elbow bending places!

Did the Center ever get the mast step on their Caledonia yawl repaired? I read on the Forum that it was broken. I think I can state, without fear of contradiction, that Elisabeth Grace's main mast will shear off at the black locust and bronze rod partners before anything on, around or near the mast step fails. She is one stout boat.

Nice boat. (Somehow that doesn't seem to do her justice, LOL.) What I want to know is why, given that traveling from NB to the Gulf Coast almost has to put them in our neighborhood, the Anderson's didn't stop in an finish Phoenix.

I will call that oversight to John's attention.

Truth be known, E.G. wasn't 100% finished when she arrived in New Orleans. Not John's fault-I had the sails and the final rigging was left to me. Bad choice!
