Got the steam box fired up last night. The cat boat upside down in the background badly needed a new keel as well as centerboard trunk. Actually, truth be told, it needs to be re-framed, but the problem is that it's iron fastened, and trying to pull them is virtually impossible, and even if you did, there's really no room for a fresh fastening. ......Any idea's?
It's a beautiful boat, Crosby built, that was originally on display at the '39 worlds fair in NYC and eventually made it's way to the West Coast.
Other action includes a new skiff way in the back and a couple canoes not seen in this pic.

Great looking shop and fine projects. I wish I had a solution to the iron fastened cat problem. The big problem is in the planking with iron sickness. Digging out the old fasteners you might be able to refasten, but how strong will the plank be around the fastener? How big is she? As a project, pulling every other plank and every other frame, 1/2 replank and reframe, followed by a like replacement of the rest of the hull will give you a new boat on the old model. Might be worth doing.

Even I, with my 3,500 sqr ft boat barn stand in awe of WFK's shop.

I nominate his shop as the best on the WBF.

Now we've seen a glimpse of boat builder heaven.

What is the boat to the right of the steam box duct work on the trailer? Is that the skiff you mentioned?

What is that cute chunky lil white dink in the near left corner? If she's unclaimed, may I have dibs on her?

I could be wrong, but I seem to recall this as a boat building co-op. A sterling idea. Looks like it's working out fine.

Great looking shop. Nice lighting. Perhaps re-frame using the hold hull (tweaked as necessary) as the mold? Once re-framed and you're satisfied with the shape then start replacing all of the planks??? Kind of like taking Thad's idea farther.

Damn! You could have a party in there!
Is that a Faye & Egan bandsaw? Someone tried to give me one of those about 10 years ago when I had no space for it, or time to restore it.... (sigh)

An old picture of the Maine Marine Museum's boatshop: a flatbottomed catboat in front, a lapstrake Whitehall next back, a Bolger strip-built outboard farthest, and a Culler surfboat on the upper right.

Thanks for all the comments. Having a place like this is something I've always wanted, and what happens is that the other guys supply their own hand tools and are free to use the power tools that are in the shop. The skiff to the left is an Oughtred Acorn, and the one to the right is New Zealand's Gifford Jackson "Marisol" shown below. The Ideas on fixing the Catboat are welcome....... We'll keep ya posted

Is that the original MARISOL or a subsequent one built from the plans?

I too am one of the lucky guys to be able to go to "boat night". It is a shame that we can't be there every day. Some day we'll have the little cat back in the water. Thanks Bill and Steve and Jay.

Another possible option on the iron sick cat is to reframe off-station, leaving or removing the original frames as indicated by their condition. The old holes in the planks need to be filled, and any floor boards need to be adjusted to fit the new frame spacing.

This allows the use of most of the old planks, assuming they are in reasonable shape, i.e. seams that will take up, etc.
