Planking Suggestions

I am attaching a photo of my sanded planking and solicit comments. Most of the planking is white oak with a few pine planks mixed in, and some are dinged (small chunks missing) and some are suffering from iron sickness from the iron nails. The planks are hard and appear to be in good shape with the exception of the above mentioned items. Take a look and make some general repair suggestions please. I have a shipwright in the yard I am in down here in the south, but I am afraid he has the shrimp and fishing boat mentalitly of quick fixes going on. My plan is to copper sheath the bottom, so a yacht finish is not required, I just want it to be sound. You are using an address on your hard drive, where the pics are stored, for the image location.

The pics (copies) need to be on the web, at a hosting service, like PhotoBucket or ImageStation.

OK, Here's the deal:

In order to get your image to pop up in the reply, (as below), it has to be stored at an image host (like Sony's "ImageStation" or "imagehosting") that allows third party access. You need to load the image to that site first.

Then you go to the host site, open the image and copy the URL from image properties.

Come back here and click the IMAGE button under Instant UBB Code, at the bottom the Post Reply screen.

Paste the URL in the blank when asked. (Be careful to only have one http in the line. You can edit if necessary). Click OK.

Then TEST by clicking Preview Post

If you can't see the image in Preview, it won't show up in your post.

Think I got it. Now short of replacing planks, what is the appropriate filler for the dings and gouges?

I guess the same question applies to bungs which have pulled off pieces of surrounding wood on their way out.

What kind of shate are the frames in?
How long has she been on the hard?

That said, sometimes a dutchman is appropriate...

You won't be happy if you fill it with epoxy, it cracks, and the worms get in.

She has only been out of the water for 3 weeks. The planks are solid except the dings in the picture, and most of them are around the fasteners. What is a dutchman?

Sometimes, when you have a steel fastened boat, the rust expands and pushes the bung up and out, along with some of the surrounding wood.

When you refasten these suckers, you need to fix the broken portions of the plank.

I think it's just easier to hang a new plank, but if for any reason you don't want to do that, you make wood patch type things that look like two wedges joined at the narrow side.

These pieces fit snugly into mortises you cut into the plank
Then you refasten.

On the Brigintine "Eye of the Wind", rather than replace the teak deck, they used diamond shaped bungs to fix the wood surrounding the fastener holes. They went about half way through the plank, with the long part of the diamond aligned with the grain. It looked like a pain in the tail to do, but it appeared to do the job.
