But in a bureaucratic coup, Disney and the previous board signed an agreement on Feb. 8 — the day before the Florida House passed a bill paving the way for the DeSantis appointees — that transferred much of the board’s power to Disney.
The new board, much to its chagrin, apparently discovered the agreement only recently.
“I’m surprised that they didn’t tell us about it as soon as we were appointed,” one of the board members, Brian Aungst Jr., told local station News 6 as the board held a meeting on Wednesday. “We had to find out about it late at night on a Friday night.”
Ron Peri, another board member, said at the meeting that under the agreement, “this board loses, for practical purposes, the majority of its ability to do anything beyond maintain the roads and maintain basic infrastructure.”

Silly Ron, his magical powers may work on the Magats but he can’t go up against the oligarchy.

And they even managed to drag King Charles III into it. From https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-65120369

A board picked by Florida's governor to oversee Disney's Orlando theme parks says it has been neutered by a last-minute contract with a royal clause.

Disney ran the district for over half a century until Florida legislators punished the conglomerate for slamming state laws regulating sex education.

But the new board says its authority has been bypassed by restrictive covenants that cite King Charles III.

The Republican-aligned board is hiring lawyers to settle the matter.

    snip

It approved the now-disputed agreement on 8 February, the day before the state's Republican-led legislature voted to empower the governor to pick his own board to oversee the 27,000 acres.

The newly created Central Florida Tourism Oversight District says the binding agreement passed last month by the previous board hands Disney total power over development of the area.

The declaration is valid until "21 years after the death of the last survivor of the descendants of King Charles III, king of England", according to the document.

So not only did he fail, but he lost what power he had? Lovely. Never mess with the mouse.

It's a strange turn of events that has us rooting for unchecked corporate power and self governance. Or rooting for Disney at all frankly.

Humanity has not and will not benefit from this fight.

It's just authoritarianism slugging it out with a mega corporation. But we cheer because of the culture war.

For sure there will be a court challenge or 12, but it's an odd feeling rooting for the big corporation - which I am in this case. Jake nailed it above.

I wonder if Prince Archie of Sussex will want mum and dad to take him to Disney?

THE NEW LEICA Q2 DISNEY EDITION IS A BEAUTIFUL PIECE OF ART

    5D4EAA29-8B0B-4EFC-B32A-8F1FC5A4835E.jpg

Leica’s willingness to collaborate with other companies keeps the camera world exciting, even for just a minute. In a world where basically every other camera on the market is more or less the same, it’s nice to see some starker variance. And the new Leica Q2 Disney edition is trying to do just that. This latest partnership between Leica and Disney may find its way into the home of every lover of classic Disney films, which started with originally hand-drawn animations.

So, will one choose one’s Leica to go with one’s outfit that day? A business casual Leica? A formal Leica?

Yep. Ol' Ron has a conundrum. Follow the law, pi$$ off the trumpers; protect his rival, and get the blow-back.

    I like it.

Don't mess with the Mouse? Don't mess with Chairman and CEO Robert Iger, a man who I spent an afternoon with at a neighbor's birthday party in Santa Monica back more than a few years ago.

Super nice, beyond brilliant and more than a little tenacious in his grip on the corporate tiller. When his hand picked successor Bob Chapek faltered as CEO in a little less than a year, the Board brought Iger back out of retirement and reinstated him in November of 2022 as CEO.

During his year in "retirement" friends say Iger kept a close watch on what was going on at the Mouse House but didn't butt in and gave Chapek plenty of room to find his own way or as it turned out, to ultimately fail.

When they brought Iger back, he was up and running in a matter of hours and there is no doubt in my mind that a man as well skilled in politics, both at the corporate as well as the governmental level had the rubes in Florida at checkmate while they were still setting up a checkers board.

I doubt that Florida doesn't have a "Claw back" clause on documents/contracts that are made w/in a certain time frame before laws/judgements are passed.

Reporting I have seen said Disney attorneys followed the letter of the law doing this. Made all the proper legal notices etc.
They did it all out in the open and Florida missed it.
