Default What its the best Gin ?

Any strong opinions out there? I recently tried Roku from Japan and liked it, it uses Japanese plants as botanicals. Also Tried The Botanist from Isalay which uses local plants.

    Hendricks? Beefeaters? Tanqueray?....

    My mom liked Bombay Sapphire.

I saw this in my local store. I had a nice time in Dingle, so why not? Surprise!

When I was in the Graduate Outing Club after a hike we drank ethyl alcohol, research grade, diluted, usually with orange juice. Not bad. It was free.

    There's gin, then there's gin.

I'm not expert, just a neophyte. But sipp'n gin is not as intense as something to stand up to some mixers - like grapefruit. In the middle is something to go with tonic.

I've got a bottle of 'Sipsmith' Dry London Gin open now, and it works ok with tonic. But tonic's a bit sweet for me, so I'm experimenting with less syruppy mixers. Tried that gin & clemantine orange soda the other day, and rather enjoyed it. Might try some with ginger beer next time I pick up some gb.

Bombay Sapphire is a “can’t go wrong” stateside.

While in Galway, I was served a glass of this with a tiny bottle of tonic water beside it.

That one sip and that bottle of tonic almost made it to the street.

We had some excellent gin and tonics while in Edinburgh. Made with the local Edinburgh Gin. Cannot find it here in our state unfortunately.

Gin is cheap white spirit with flavourings that distilleries produce in order to get a product to market fast. As compared to whisky, that has to be aged in expensive barrels for years.

I have Hendricks, Tanqueray, and Sapphire in the cupboard right now. But I almost always reach for the Sapphire.

Best? Dunno. There are some good ones out there.

Bombay Sapphire Blue is nice. This one: https://drumshanbogunpowderirishgin.com/ is interesting.

Boils down to personal taste - I like the ones that tend to be a bit less Juniper-forward. I would prefer a drink - not a mouthful of pine needles.

We tried some Aviation and found it OK. Not really gin folks, but we liked it better than Tanqueray. My wife didn't like it quite as well as Bombay Sapphire, but I've not tried that one for comparison. Hints of lavender, not so much juniper.

Sapphire is our go-to, but since one of our kids bought us a bottle of Roku, we've been wavering.

My brother makes his own. He's rather good at it. The secret is in the botanicals, of course. Watching him de-pith citrus skins, he's welcome to it. I just drink it.

Some of my preferred gins include Gordons, Tanqueray, Bombay Saphire. There's a cheap and nasty in Thailand called Bartons. Ugh

    I favour Plymouth gin.

Garden shed distillers are now coming out of the woodwork.
We make about 160 bottles per batch. Due to this, during very busy times it may take a couple of days longer to get the product to you. We will always keep customers up to date about delivery times. When we are fully stocked we dispatch orders within 2 working days by 2nd class, 1st class or courier.

Lots of small distillers is no joke. When in the UK last summer we discovered a gin distillery in Whitchurch that had gins on offer that I liked, so I brought some home - only to discover that their products aren’t available here.

We also got to another, larger one along the Derwent near Bassenthwaite that did whisky, vodka and gin. Sqwrl Gurl took a liking to the salted caramel vodka….

Gin has been a much bigger “thing” over there of late. One pub had a tasting list of over 100 different gins and a bazillion gin based cocktails. Would take months to think of sampling your way through.

The best gin is one someone else is drinking, I've tried the stuff and it is foul.

There's a craft distillery in Gagetown, about 40 minutes away, specializing in gin. It's been a revelation.

For their base spirit, they're starting with cider - Gagetown is a longtime orcharding community. They manage to keep just a hint of the apples in some of their lines, just peeking through the mixes of different botanicals for the finish. Alas, they charge double the price of the decent range of the commercial producers, so we don't get it often.

I like the "Cabinet of Curiosities" series from Hendricks. Their Neptunia makes a fine G&T.

    For a G&T - Adnams Copperhouse

For a Pink Gin* - Plymouth

For a Dry Martini - Berry Bros & Rudd No.3

    * A Royal Navy pink gin is a dash of Angostura bitters in a wine glass with a measure of Gordon’s gin. Not some girly concoction.

Many decades ago during my early career working for other architectural firms, it was not uncommon for a few of us to go out for lunch that included a couple of drinks (this was the late ‘60s). My drink of choice then was Tanqueray on the rocks. A taste of Tanqueray these days transports me right back to those thrilling days of yesteryear. (Is it any wonder the architecture of the ‘60s era was a little strange?)

A high school game involving quarters and a half gallon of Gordons cured me of ever touching the stuff again. Waking up in a patch of ivy helped too.

    From Gin Lane:

Gin, cursed Fiend, with Fury fraught,
    Makes human Race a Prey.
It enters by a deadly Draught

In my early drinking days or as they used to call it "The Sporting Life" ( love that phrase ) I used to drink T&T's Tanqueray and tonic, then one day after a few too many it started to taste like drinking a pine tree.

Now if I ever order a TRUE martini I go for a dirty Bombay Blue Safire martini with blue cheese olives.

Although I hear Hendrix and Aviation make some nice gin

Yes. Dirty Sapphire with olives. Although I like the pimentos as long as they are Manzanilla olives. At a bar I order it with a twist because I really don’t like Queen olives. And I’m not afraid of a little vermouth. The extra extra dry martini fad doesn’t do it for me.
