Default Truck guys: what do you think of Musk’s ‘cyber truck’?

I’m not a truck guy… not at all. I don’t even like to drive the Mazda SUV we have… I much prefer small cars.

However, I can understand the appeal of a pickup truck for those who have a genuine use for one. If I were in the trades, or an active boatbuilding hobbyist (or even professional), a pickup truck would be invaluable.

So, I’m wondering what you truck guys think of the Tesla thing. It strikes me as especially unappealing… I’m guessing that the configuration of the bed isn’t at all practical, for hauling stuff.

Aside from the practicality, it strikes me as being butt-f#$k ugly. There are vehicle shapes whose beauty transcends time; consider the Jaguar XKE as one of the best examples… it’s been beautiful for decades.

The Tesla abomination, to me, looks like a prop from some direct-to-the-discount-bin DVD of some late 1960’s grade B sci fi film.

    Opinions? (From truck guys, especially)?
"Reason and facts are sacrificed to opinion and myth. Demonstrable falsehoods are circulated and recycled as fact. Narrow minded opinion refuses to be subjected to thought and analysis. Too many now subject events to a prefabricated set of interpretations, usually provided by a biased media source. The myth is more comfortable than the often difficult search for truth."

Exactly correct. The thing is without a single aesthetic element.

I've had a lot of trucks over the years, and four vans. My last truck was a 2018 Tundra and my current ride is a Chevy Express 2500 cargo van. To my mind, a heavy duty van is just about the most functional work vehicle ever.

    It's not a truck, it's a publicity stunt.

I think it’s absolutely FUGLY just like the founder.

Lots of Rivian’s around here and everyone I see is truly a very nice looking and capable pickup truck. I especialy like the color options and I even like the distinctive headlights. Their SUV is very Land Rover like and equally nice design and color options as well as fully capable. If I was to buy another EV it would probably be the Rivian RIS

I’m just a guy, more of a blue cheese bicycle tire kind of guy. But since I am a guy I have an answer to your question.

It’s fugly. It’s probably designed by Musk who is not a truck guy.

It has a profile like the F-117 Nighthawk.

    Dumb as hell.

And that Truckla isn't much better- needs Ford F-150 ground clearance.

i've long thought that it looks like it was designed for a futuristic movie. like, "here's some sheet metal, fab me something sleek and futurish."

    not bad by that standard.

I think for the vast majority of truck owners, it is just an affectation, a male appendage. The cyber truck doesn't look right, and it doesn't sound right, so it won't catch on.

If I was a truck guy I’d want something with the aesthetic of a 1950’s Dodge Power Wagon with two and four door models. Max speed around 70 mph but happier around 60mph. PHEV w super caps. Maybe a turbo four cylinder. Turn signal light replacement costing $15 from auto parts store. 0-60 in 15 seconds. Able to carry 2000 lbs or tow 7500lbs.

Its funny 75% of the time in the last 30 years I've driven some form of truck and although a guy I have absolutely no clue what a truck guy is. I read it has something to do with penises.

Looks weird, if it stands up to the hype, like most of Tesla's offerings, it will be an amazing vehicle. That is . . . if it's priced right. I have a reserve on one, the $100 one that puts me in line, I think I'm number one million something something. . . . I don't think I'll be able to afford one.

Down the street from me is a 25 year old Hunter Green Toyota pickup truck It has a manual transmission. It has stock size tires, and the bed is at an easily accessible level. It has a four cylinder gasoline engine. The only accessories are a Kenwood CD FM, and a lockable toolbox in the back. It is the DC3 of pickups. And I covet every time I walk past.

But you'd buy a Ford (Nazi) a VW (founded by Nazis), Toyota (lol, if you think they are any better than Musk)? Seriously. You'd be walking around naked, starving, and homeless if you decided to apply morals to all the items you make a choice to consume.

I’ve had three. Each one larger than the previous.

My’01 Tundra hit the sweet spot.

    I miss it.

And way better looking than the cyber truck.

Still in touch with an old girlfriend from the 70's. She was a framer and roofer then, and drove a ratty old chevy pickup. Now she's a remodeling contractor and drives a restored vintage Chevy pickup. There ARE female pickup fans out there. Just not a ton. But good on 'em.

Well, would asking for a source be to much to ask? Sorry, but Tesla puts out good products. Everyone I know who owns one loves them. I have no reason to believe the truck will be any different. Millions of reservations says people like the design and/or the concept. Yes, Tesla has to put up, but again, I have no reason to believe they wont.

Tesla has a reputation for over-promising while under-delivering. The truck is one example, with several facets of that behavior on display.

Example? Their cars are awesome. Over-promising on "Full-self-driving" . . . sure. But man, they've come a long way and the tech is amaze-balls. If there was a service center in my state, I'd buy a model y. It can tow as much as my 4runner did and is great in the snow.

Lol, car and driver. I have never meet an unhappy Tesla owner. Car and driver went the way of consumer reports a long time ago. I have no faith in their reporting.
