    America! What a country!

Every minute of every day, someone in America is caressing a gun and wondering what it would be like to shoot people.

From the article linked in the OP:
According to data compiled by Education Week, there were 12 school shootings in 2023 through 23 March that have resulted in deaths or injuries in the US

3 kids, 3 adults dead. The shooter is described as a teenaged female, carrying two assault rifles and a handgun.

Could this be the first mass shooting by a female?

Edited to add: this is not the first instance of a female shooter, although one expert said it is exceptionally rare.

There was a girl who shot kids in a school in Texas, around 1980 or so, and when asked why she said “I don’t like Mondays”.

I’m sure this latest shooter was just one of the “well regulated militia”, right?

Why does it seem to get worse? I almost think it's because so many of us seem to tolerate it.

What do I mean by "tolerate it?" I can't say exactly, but I was just looking at "shootings" in general and I found these numbers:

NY City population: 8.8 million (in 5 boroughs)

    2022 shootings: 1294

Portland Or population: 646,396 (greater metro area 2.2 million)

    2022 shootings: 1308

Are these numbers inaccurate? Is there a reporting issue? Is there something I'm missing? Is a population of 8.8 million in one part of the country so very different from less than a million in another part of the country? If there is a difference, what is it, and does it affect these shooting statistics.

Yes, too many of us do 'tolerate it'. By 'it'... I mean the core issue. Concentration of wealth and power at the top.

School shootings, and gun violence are but one facet of the rising social dysfunction brought on by a society/economy Out Of Balance. There are MANY facets: homelessness; food insecurity; xenophobia; turmoil in the public schools; protectionism; political corruption; lack of affordable housing; etc. --

The only thing that will stop a bad teenager with a gun is a good teenager with a gun.

If we ever get there, I will stop working with school students.

It's all about having the right role models
There is no rational, logical, or physical description of how free will could exist. It therefore makes no sense to praise or condemn anyone on the grounds they are a free willed self that made one choice but could have chosen something else. There is no evidence that such a situation is possible in our Universe. Demonstrate otherwise and I will be thrilled.

The latest revelation is the shooter was not a teen...she's 28 years old.

Then a blanket statement would be misleading. Some have... for now... certainly TOO MANY... and some haven't. Just like, for a long time, too many tolerated lack of female suffrage. Or agreed with Prohibition. Or allow the ban on gay marriages. Or many other forms of inequity and dysfunction.

So all of those factors are significantly different in Portland, Or as compared to NY City, and that explains more shootings in Portland than NY City, even though Portland has less than one twelfth of the population of NY City??????????

I would suggest that a failed system of governance is the problem, and that recovery will be difficult to implement with a population that has yet to fully find the status quo intolerable ( more and more of them are finding it intolerable, I'll give you that).

We all know damn well who's to blame. You know it's the NRA. You know it's Republicans who are blocking sane gun reform.

At best, they ignore these murders. At worst, they LOVE them — because talk of gun reform will come up, and that INCREASES gun sales.

Either way, blood is on their hands. And the rest of us are filled with rage.

I ask you to join me. Write all your media; papers, radio, tv and beg them to keep a running total daily of gun deaths year to date. Papers can have a little block on the front page that updates the number daily. TV can have a small block in the corner of the screen as they do with countdown clocks before some event. Radio would be a bit difficult, but I'm sure they could find a few seconds here and there to just give the number of people killed by guns so far this year.

I believe that is one way to get more support for doing something about it.

Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.) responded to the deadly shooting at the Covenant School in Nashville that left six people dead, including three children, with a statement on Twitter saying her office is ready to assist local officials, and to “join us in prayer for those affected.”

Why do we even bother with these threads?
    Evil has won over good.
The GOP fully condones dead children lying dead in our schools.
The McConnell Supreme Court will never, ever allow any gun laws.

A country where armed police are placed in schools to prevent children being shot there, where poverty is chronic, where drug addiction is through the roof, living in fear of China. A paranoid country with no self-respect where fault always lies elsewhere.
