    Default Watergate

Just watched, despite knowing it all, a documentary on Watergate and its consequences. The American President held to account for his crimes.
You missed a coup by that much….. and then he was pardoned because….. precedent.

    and then……. donald………. and precedent………..good luck with that one………
Compared to him Nixon still had a skerrick of honour.

Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication. Leonardo da Vinci.

If war is the answer........... it must be a profoundly stupid question.

The Watergate scandal leading up to Nixon's resignation in August 1974 was about social mood. The economy was flat, inflation started 1973 at 3.27%, peaked at 11.05% in early 1974 and was about 10% at the time of Nixon's resignation. The bank prime loan rate had risen from 4.7% in March 1972 to 12% in July 1974. The Yom Kippur war and Arab oil embargo spiked oil prices, and the stock market was in a brutal bear market. These factors created a negative social landscape, and played a leading role in the public's perception of Nixon's presidency.

These few words are not to condone the break-in, but are to suggest that without the negative social landscape, Watergate might have been remembered as "another day at someone else's office!"

I remember Ford issuing that pardon and thinking: If he pardons Nixon, why not pardon those in prison for doing Nixon's wants?

I disagree. Back then both parties cooperated. Republicans asked the tough questions, rather than lining up in blind support of a Republican president. The famous question; "What did the president know and when did he know it?" was asked by a Republican. It was Republicans who walked into the White House and told Nixon he needed to resign.

One big difference then: the public, regardless of their source of news, all had the same set of facts.
