    Impressive to whom?

From what I've seen of chatbots, they are merely plagiarists, only able to compile and regurgitate what others have already said, very quickly, and with very little depth and no understanding whatsoever.

About the same level of writing as a mediocre 9th grade student who has been taught exam-friendly formulas to follow in their writing.

These things are the Segue of the AI world from what I've seen so far.

Depending on one for writing is indeed lame. However, they are good for research; even as they are, they can help in gathering info from various sources.

Additionally, I expect to see them largely eliminate many junior programming jobs soon, as you can already ask them for a piece of code in various popular programming languages. Not sure how one can become a senior programmer without being a junior first, but we'll see.

Of course, since Bard is from Google, its main job is to gather data about us.

Computers beat the best human chess players. It seems "the cat's out of the bag." Is it not reasonable to assume that it's only a matter of time for AI to surpass humans at all thinking, including all the arts?

It's important to remember that this software is not Artificial Intelligence. It's software that can learn, but it's choices/"decisions" are controlled by code that a person wrote.

OK everyone calm down, you do realize that all of us WBF geezers are way past our sell by date, and none of us are writing term papers for school anymore. I just think it's fun to play with and as Garret says it's "they are good for research; even as they are, they can help in gathering info from various sources."

If you really want your head to explode I just read the newest version of Chat GPT4 passed the bar exam, and writes perfect code in every computer language perfectly.

None of them do this. I just had the Bing "AI" write me some SQL code (for their own database!) this morning & while it got close, I had to fix a few things. None can write a line of code in the language I generally use.

Are these AI apps capable of producing a range of opinions or are we heading for global group thinking?

They'll produce whatever you ask them to. Ask for a comment on a topic that makes Trump look bad & you'll get one. Ask for one that makes him look good & you'll get one. They also happily write stuff that is based on lies & write 'em as well as ones based on truth.

As I said above - they are not artificial intelligence.

All of this technology does not bode well for the future of mankind and this is one time I'm happy to be old and nearing the end of my run on the big blue orb.

When an autonomous Ai can fly a combat mission in a fighter, I will be impressed. And very worried. Until then...

None of them could write a line of code in ANY language five years ago, ten if I'm playing it really safe. Just saying.
I watched a YouTube on AI generated photorealistic art, and training the AI models being used. Holy ****, what they were outputting just six months ago looks carp compared with what they are doing now. The rate of change, as with any new tech, is exponential.

i bet autonomous ai learns how to interfere with democratic elections before they become effective fighter pilots

    what's scarier?
Simpler is better, except when complicated looks really cool.

They already have. Maybe indirectly, but ask one to write a support document for Jan.1 & then ask it to write one against it. Or - one in support of the last election being stolen, etc. etc.
