Sad story, with a successful ending: sort of. A New Jersey State Patrolman walked out of a hospital where he was being cared for, and disappeared. After an extensive search, he was found unharmed. Good. Hope he’s OK. But …
Why would the New Jersey State Patrol employ a man who has the motto of the Hitler Youth tattooed on his neck?

There is no rational, logical, or physical description of how free will could exist. It therefore makes no sense to praise or condemn anyone on the grounds they are a free willed self that made one choice but could have chosen something else. There is no evidence that such a situation is possible in our Universe. Demonstrate otherwise and I will be thrilled.

OTOH (and I really hesitate to defend this guy at all) getting a tattoo when you're young and stupid that you regret later is so common as to be stereotypical. I haven't the slightest idea if that's true in this case.

Young and stupid might be getting a tattoo of your then girlfriend's name, "Mom", or a flaming skull, or the logo of your favorite beer, or even an 8 Ball.
"Blood and Honor" "88", a "Swastika, or similar isn't stupid, it's a life choice and an all-in commitment. There is also tattoo removal options once the stupid is outgrown and obviously not availed here.

And while we examine his fitness of mind to serve, let's also consider his tat from the vantage of those he's pledging to protect. How does that neck ring make them feel? Are they going to feel confident that he's on the scene to respect and protect them - or will he instill fear in the populace?

There was a piece on NPR last week about California gangs. No news news there regarding gang prevalence on the streets and in prisons . But very interesting part about prison guard gangs and law enforcement gangs. But same MO. They preyed on the weaker ones and if you didn't join or reported something, well a person didn't get very far...
