What's not on a boat costs nothing, weighs nothing, and can't break

    "Over thirty boats damaged"
Looks a bit more than just 'damage'.
Nothing burns like a fiberglass boat.
I was born on a wooden boat that I built myself.

    That's some toxic smoke there.

Yes. Fortunately, Voula's is OK. One of the better diner breakfasts in Seattle.

The buildings were saved, but of course all 30 boats and the storage rack were lost. Amazing that little damage after watching that video. Major thanks to the Seattle fire responders. And the arsonist was arrested on the site hiding in a nearby moored boat, and was taken to Harborview hospital for injuries.

More on this from Seattle Fire.

    https://fireline.seattle.gov/2023/03...sity-district/

    Apparently, quite the turnout.

14 engine companies, 5 ladder companies, the fireboat CHIEF SEATTLE, plus other support units, as well as the Seattle Police Harbor Patrol boat (which has pumps and 1-2 monitors on it).

No idea why the name, but "monitor" is the name for the water cannons on fireboats. These:

Monitors are a form of hydrant. A firefighter can turn it on, aim it, and leave the area to do other work. Some can be remotely aimed from inside the cab.

Every engine in the SFD fleet carries one of these, we call it a "monitor" because....well...because that's just what we call it. Same bit of curlicue plumbing mounted to the top of the engine is called a "deck gun" and a similar bit of kit out on the end of an aerial ladder is called a "ladder pipe". They fall into the broader category of "master streams" which deliver more than 500 gallons per minute (most pumps are rated to deliver 1500 gpm but can go higher).

Knowing the nomenclature is important so when an officer says "Deck gun it" or "Set up the monitor" or "We need a ladder pipe" everybody on the fireground knows exactly what they mean.

"14 engine companies, 5 ladder companies, the fireboat CHIEF SEATTLE, plus other support units,"

For perspective, there are 33 fire stations in the city with roughly 220 members on duty every day (the exact number floats a bit) so this fire sucked up about half the available resources that night.
