I subscribe to the New York Times online. When I started it was $10-$15 then it went to $17 now I just got an email

I’m writing to let you know that your subscription rate will increase to $20.00 every 4 weeks from your current rate of $17.00 every 4 weeks. This new rate will go into effect starting on or after May 04, 2023. Your payment method will be charged in advance.

I enjoy reading it daily on my iPad with the very well done NYT app, and I do enjoy not dealing with a pay wall. Although these subscriptions are getting out of controle. I have Netflix, Amazon Prime, Apple TV, Hulu, an exercise app, a cycling app, Pandora, apple music, Apple cloud storage and probably a few I'm forgetting, and they are all incrementally increasing their fees.

That $20 NYT subscription is just at the edge of me going hmmm do I cancel. I know it's a small amount but all the subscriptions start adding up. I know I'm not getting my moneys worth out of Netflix, maybe I will cancel that and feel good about keeping the $20 NYT subscription.

How do you all deal with all these subscription services.

I have exactly one video streaming at a time. I buy apple music for a month and cancel immediately, to have it for exactly a month, if I fancy making a very particular mixtape (?) for an upcoming long trip. I settle for ad-financed newspapers and only get paid content if there's really something worth it. It's not often. I put up with ads in my TuneIn radio streaming.

Paying for subscriptions in case I'll fancy using the service is not the same as paying insurance. You can live without them. You can wait a few days, if you need something.

I've had a NYT crossword puzzle subscription for years. I do the puzzle every day. It keeps my my mind shapr and my whits kean. It also helps build vocabules.

The online subscription to the Washington Post jumped in price. I canceled. The post came back and offered me a smoking deal. I suspect the New York times may do the same.

We are currently paying $4/week. I just got an email offering $1/week. We have never paid more than $4/week.

I have been getting the basic NYT rate...$8 a month for over a year...maybe I got a deal...( I did get it for a$1 a week for 6 months ) Heck, I did have a long conversation at one point with a sales person...I kept saying I would drop it...

I've had a NYT crossword puzzle subscription for years. I do the puzzle every day. It keeps my my mind shapr and my whits kean. It also helps build vocabules.

As to what Bobcat said: my daughters new car came with 3 months of Sirius XM satt radio. As the deadline got near, she called them and said it was nice, but just not the $15 a month to continue. The operator then offered it to her for $4 a month.

You have to be continually on your toes.

Do you subscribe to the LA Times? If not, right now you could get a six month digital subscription for one dollar. I have to wait two more months for that, I subscribe once a year, then they make me wait six months between subscriptions to get the one dollar rate

I like the New Yorker but hate to pay the "full" rate.. I think I have one year digital at $49.99 right now. I make a note of the subscription end date on the calendar so I can cancel, but they always renew me a couple of weeks early at over a hundred bucks. Then I have to cancel and get a refund. Then I renew at $6 for 12 weeks - then they resubscribe me early and I go through the cancelation/refund process again. I'd love to make a private deal with them and save both them and me the hassle. $35 or $40 per year for life would suit me, but that's not going to happen.

I gave up on the NY Times and the Washington Post after subscribing to both. I scan their headlines and if a story interests me I dig it out from a variety of free sources - a time waster to be sure. I subscribed to the Wall Street Journal but they pissed me off and care now on my discard list.

I subscribe to Netflix and Amazon Prime for movies and series, but I''m becoming displeased that many Prime features require an additional subscription. For example, I pay seven bucks a month extra to get the PBS Masterpiece features.

You have to be continually on your toes or you'll be bleeding a hundred bucks or more a month.

We're really cheap about subscription services, and they still get out of control. But NYT? Never. I was an early adopter when New York Times offered permanent free subscriptions. As soon as they welched on that and demanded payment, I left the building. I'll never subscribe, to that one. We already subscribe to two newspapers, and I worked in the newspaper industry for more than 30 years, as a reporter, editor and publisher. I don't like being played.

So I went to go and cancel my subscription but they don't let you do that as easy as clicking a button. You must call or chat with a subscription customer care specialist.

i go to the library, not for the new york times nor other daily rags, which i do take online

but for a lot of stuff: scientific american, nat geo, the new yorker, the economist, in-fisherman - its all there, all free, paid for by an endowment from andrew carnegie and late fees

I don't even know where the local library is.

I do send a donation to WNYC New York's NPR station that I stream for free on all my devices and in my car. Just because I like hearing familiar NY voices. Also one of the reason I'm drawn to Law & Order just to hear A.D.A Sonny just. give the best Bronx accent on TV.

You know what they say about rich people, the reason they are rich is they live like they are poor and poor people are poor because they live like rich people. I'm just trying to find balance and $10 a month savings just by making a phone call seems like a smart move to continue to support free and balanced journalism.

Also when I first moved here I subscribed to the Sunday NYT delivered but 1/2 the time it never showed up or was stolen from the mailroom so I went digital. I've been paying or supporting the NYT in one way or another since high school.

As for the roll of fabulously wealthy dog-wash magnate I do OK, we are looking forward to a month in Italy and sailing the Greek islands in September. At least now I know I can read my beloved NYT on my iPad in Europe now

We have a Sunday-only print subscription. That comes with all the digital access as well.

I never said i live poor. I find it funny because i know you love to inspect every one of my post So I’m surprised that you missed this crucial part

Print version costs me $4.00 per week day and Saturday, Sunday is more. I drive 6 miles to get it every morning. They won't deliver here, despite the fact that the local paper is delivered on our road.

I cancelled and they asked the question why?
I told them it "cost too much" and they immediately gave me back the old rate for another year.
edit; $2 per month is my online rate, I don't need any paper.

I used to go to the library, but they closed it down for Covid (Nothing else, just the library) Now it's only open 3 days a week during school hours, so kids can't get books after school, and the books I donated, were all rejected as "too controversial"..... Really? "Educated" is too controversial for a library?

Joe, way 'back in the day', I used to deliver the print edition of the Sunday NYT to the doors of the apartments on my letter carrier route . . . . Thanks to all who are getting the digital edition ( those white mail sacks full of the NYT were heavy )

I would bring it home and read it hung over with coffee and a bagel, always reading the magazine, then the arts section, then real estate, then travel in that order.

For me, the Sunday NYT reading order was always

- Front Page
- Week in Review
- Arts & Leisure
- Travel
- Magazine

Unless, breakfasting with other people, and then the reading order got mangled due to section sharing.

In contrast to the OP, my monthly subscription for a leading UK daily (internet access) was of the order of 5 quid till around mid-2022.

I somehow breached the date for subscription renewal in 2022 while I was awaiting receipt of a new CC, the (then) current CC having been hacked and cancelled.

On contacting subscription renewals, they slapped a 20 quid (minimum) monthly payment - what a nerve ! - which I flatly turned down.

Have gone without since and should I drop in to read it now and then, am politely requested to sign-up again for just 1 (one) quid per month for a full year , following which new rates may prevail.

Am giving it a thought...
