Default Not with a bang, but with a whimper.

Latest ICC report says that if we do not change our behaviour, and we won't, we and many other species are stuffed.

The world is likely to pass a dangerous temperature threshold within the next 10 years, pushing the planet past the point of catastrophic warming — unless nations drastically transform their economies and immediately transition away from fossil fuels, according to one of the most definitive reports ever published about climate change.

The report released Monday by the U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) found that the world is likely to surpass its most ambitious climate target — limiting warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) above preindustrial temperatures — by the early 2030s.

Beyond that threshold, scientists have found, climate disasters will become so extreme that people will not be able to adapt. Basic components of the Earth system will be fundamentally, irrevocably altered. Heat waves, famines and infectious diseases could claim millions of additional lives by century’s end.

Where there is a will there is a way. If only we could put a price on the environment, maybe the money people would take notice???

Funnily enough, that was a concept introduced by my professors during my first degree... near on 50 years ago. Still haven't got it done yet.

Over the last few years, I've been absolutely stunned by the number of conspiracy theorists I've encountered, and on top of that, the low level of understanding of relatively basic economic, environmental and dare I say medical / scientific concepts...... absolutely stunned.

The op article is about an IPCC report and you come in with a picture and disdain for unspecified others. Anything about the topic?

Lee, you must know by now that this is the way know-nothings "debate". They bring condescension and derision to discredit the opposition without actually saying anything definitive. It's how Fox News and other sources have taught them.

    from the link

Whatever we do the poor and vulnerable will bear the brunt. As it always has been.

Back to the topic. My $.02 is we’re stuffed, some more than others. Maybe the challenge is to come up with ideas on how homo saps can maneuver through the stuffing.

I would suggest a plague that kills off 95% of the population.

A more palatable option is to wait and let 95% of the population died off due to changes in the environment and hope that some survive.

I expect the second option will prevail.

We are so stuffed. Many have prospered in these days of decline. Too bad I was not smarter or more powerful to get more and do more. My residual carbon footprint is not as large as many of yours. I did not spend my life chopping down valuable trees for stupid recreation, living in places that made me burned more fuel or drove for hundreds of thousands of miles in big belchers or created a number of unsustainable rug rats. I accept my place in this responsibility. I lived rather conservatively - There was and always will be a larger groups of others that were willing to take it all and burn this place to the ground faster that I was willing to do.

I’m always amazed to hear people who keep coming up with reasons why we shouldn’t do anything to address global warming.

At first the argument was that the “science wasn’t settled” (even though it was). They could always point to a scientist or two (usually funded by the fossil fuel industry) who disagreed with all the others, that way they could convince themselves nothing needed to be done.

After a certain point, the argument changed: “OK, the earth is warming, but it’s natural cycles/sun related/etc.”. Nothing needed to be done.

Now everyone seems to agree that the change is definitely happening/and it’s Human caused. So the argument has changed. “It’s too expensive/too disruptive/etc.” to do anything. I remember reading posts in this forum from members who angrily denounced any attempts by government to limit their lifestyle in the name of addressing climate change.

What is the cost of not doing anything? We will pay one way or the other, in my opinion.

$.02 the things we can do are also the things that can help through crisis and depletion of fossil resources. We just aren’t psychologically fit for this crisis so we’ll wait until the wolf’s at the door. Then the banging and whimpering starts.

    Global warming isn't real.
If it is, it's not serious.
If it is, it is not man-made.
If it is, there is nothing we can do about it.
If there is, it's too expensive.
If it isn't, change the subject to Al Gore's/Greta's/somebody's personal life.

Been hearing it since the last millenium.

It is well known that Americans consume far more natural resources and live much less sustainably than people from any other large country of the world. “A child born in the United States will create thirteen times as much ecological damage over the course of his or her lifetime than a child born in Brazil,” reports the Sierra Club’s Dave Tilford, adding that the average American will drain as many resources as 35 natives of India and consume 53 times more goods and services than someone from China.
Tilford cites a litany of sobering statistics showing just how profligate Americans have been in using and abusing natural resources. For example, between 1900 and 1989 U.S. population tripled while its use of raw materials grew by a factor of 17. “With less than 5 percent of world population, the U.S. uses one-third of the world’s paper, a quarter of the world’s oil, 23 percent of the coal, 27 percent of the aluminum, and 19 percent of the copper,” he reports. “Our per capita use of energy, metals, minerals, forest products, fish, grains, meat, and even fresh water dwarfs that of people living in the developing world.”
He adds that the U.S. ranks highest in most consumer categories by a considerable margin, even among industrial nations. To wit, American fossil fuel consumption is double that of the average resident of Great Britain and two and a half times that of the average Japanese. Meanwhile, Americans account for only five percent of the world’s population but create half of the globe’s solid waste.
Americans’ love of the private automobile constitutes a large part of their poor ranking. The National Geographic Society’s annual Greendex analysis of global consumption habits finds that Americans are least likely of all people to use public transportation—only seven percent make use of transit options for daily commuting. Likewise, only one in three Americans walks or bikes to their destinations, as opposed to three-quarters of Chinese. While China is becoming the world’s leader in total consumption of some commodities (coal, copper, etc.), the U.S. remains the per capita consumption leader for most resources.
Overall, National Geographic’s Greendex found that American consumers rank last of 17 countries surveyed in regard to sustainable behavior. Furthermore, the study found that U.S. consumers are among the least likely to feel guilty about the impact they have on the environment, yet they are near to top of the list in believing that individual choices could make a difference.
Paradoxically, those with the lightest environmental footprint are also the most likely to feel both guilty and disempowered. “In what may be a major disconnect between perception and behavior, the study also shows that consumers who feel the guiltiest about their impact—those in China, India and Brazil—actually lead the pack in sustainable consumer choices,” says National Geographic’s Terry Garcia, who coordinates the annual Greendex study. “That’s despite Chinese and Indian consumers also being among the least confident that individual action can help the environment.”
Readers can discover how they stack up by taking a survey on National Geographic’s Greendex website. But brace yourself if you are a typical American: You might not like what you find out about yourself.

He may be, and Aus is no shirker in the per capita use of resources. But it is too late I reckon. Of course I may be wrong, but at present the portents are not good for many of the worlds species including us. OTOH the planet does not care. We've been about for round 2 milion years, I doubt we'll see another. "Eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow we die" may not be far from the reality.
With luck a relict population may survive somewhere, humans are adaptable, probably all burocrats and military. But those who still have the skills to survive may be subsistence farmers out of Africa or some such, again.
    Interesting scientific scenario isn't it?

I forgot the most insipid of all the excuses why nothing should be done about Global Warming: The thinking seems to go along these lines: “Those who advocate for changes to address the issue are burning fossil fuels themselves! Since they have not adopted a carbon free existence, why should I agree that anything should be done to even address the problem? I’ll just sit here smug in my satisfaction that I know better than everyone else”.
