As a balance to the thread on bull**** aviation movies, what are the best, in your opinion?
I'm not really qualified to rule, but I might submit the one about Lindberg's famous flight, with (??) Jimmy Stewart.

the right stuff
Simpler is better, except when complicated looks really cool.
“Amelia”. Because I like Hillary Swank.
“The Great Waldo Pepper”
“Come, come, my conservative friend, wipe the dew off your spectacles and see the world is moving" - Elizabeth Cady Stanton
Flight of the Phoenix. The first one with Jimmy Stewart.
If you get a chance, try to view “Devotion”. It’s the flick about the first Black Navy aviator, and the friend who tried to save his life. Good movie, and they somehow managed to create a script without a single cliché in it.

Blue Max wasn't too bad.

Considering when they made it, the Dam Busters was quite good. 633 sqn was not great, but the flying was pretty good. I met two of the guys flying the Mosquitos. Health and safety were not too operational then.

What was the movie where Brian Dennehy restarted the engine by climbing out while the Beaver was gliding without power.

There are two kinds of boaters: those who have run aground, and those who lie about it.
Free fall Flight 174, The Gimli Glider. Keeping in mind the year it was made. If it were made today with current technology it would probably be much better.
Sully was pretty good. IMO one of Tom Hanks better performances.
coincidental that I am currently re reading my large collection of aviation safety and disaster books prior to passing them on as I downsize my library in preparation for a probable move. Tonight’s selection is Safety Last by Captain X, 1972. A “gift” from my father in the early 80’s when I got my pilots license lol.
Stay calm, be brave....wait for the signs. Possibly precariously prevaricating.

Those magnificent men in their flying machines.
No highway in the sky
I'd much rather lay in my bunk all freakin day lookin at Youtube videos .
Don't know about the best category, but it is an interesting story about the Canadian aviation industry in the postwar years following the great success of the RCAF and associated industries during WW2. While the writers may have utilized some minor liberties to the truth, and tarted it up Hollywood style, the gist of this story is accurate and in sync with the historical record. / Jim

Battle of Britain tops the list of course.
Waldo Pepper.
Piece of Cake.
Tora Tora Tora
Memphis Belle, and Thunderbolt (the original wartime propaganda versions)
The best aviation movies are about airplanes, and flying, not people. Hollywood rarely endorses that, with funding.
When William Wyler was finished editing “Memphis Belle” in 1944, he left behind reels and reels of 16mm footage of 8th Air Force life in England and in the air.
It has now been put together in tribute.
HBO is showing it, “The Cold Blue”.

Some classics:
Dawn Patrol (1938)
Only Angels Have Wings (1939)
Flying also figured in some more recent films that I love, such as Out of Africa (1985):
And The English Patient (1996)

Might sort out movies with aviation cinematography vs. storytelling. I might nominate "Bridges at Toko-Ri". More recently a remake of Lafayette Escadrille, and the latest Midway movie.
