Not socialism, as the state of CA does not intend to own the means of insulin mfgr. They are just eliminating the middleman, it seems.

I'm sure the drug companies and said middlemen will find a gun-for-hire lawyer to argue against it.

How about we fix the quality of food, diets, encourage physical movement and discourage obesity so people don't get diabetes as easily?

That would be progress. Yeah - medicine is the cheap, fast fix in a world you can not criticize real reason why diabetes happens.
Without friends none of this is possible.

Some are born diabetic. Some (a vanishingly small # to be sure), like Paladin, lose their pancreas to a piece of hot lead.

    Good idea.

But the way you say it makes it sound like either/or. And like it's solely an issue of 'personal responsibility'. It's not.

I'm going to disagree right here...
    See: https://www.cdc.gov/diabetes/basics/diabetes.html

My nephew collapsed at the podium while presenting a treatise for his master's thesis (Bates) and the final diagnoses was type one diabetes. He (a lacrosse player) never had any previous symptoms and all the diets in the world won't change that. It's a big deal.
(He subsequently gave up on his literary career plan and went to work at the Joslin Clinic in Boston. While there he attended (free) night school at Harvard taking pre med classes, and went on with a scholarship to become an MD)

It's a stinker of a disease and the profiteering done on insulin is disgusting. A good friend of mine, a Type 1 diabetic since he was a kid, suicided last year - in his early-mid 50's - due to the health and lifestyle impacts of it. In his case, he'd progressed through prostate removal in his late 40's and significant heart operations in his early 50's. As he said when I tried to talk him out of it "life holds no joy anymore" Apparently the beta-blockers used in relation to the heart issues kill the endorphins - and as he said "even an orgasm isn't fun anymore, or backing a bike into a corner at speed... it's all just mehhh..." He bought his ex girlfriend a house and business, gave his bikes to friends, said goodbye and went to sleep.

We agree that it is not all or nothing. We really need to have a national serious dialog about what is making many sick. We demand that insulin should be cheap and yet not a single word about government subsidized corn syrup and sugar corn products in every process food is making us sick with diabetes. We are bigger and fatter than we were 20 and 30 years ago. It is not by mistake as our diet and lack of physical exercise has changed our physiology in mass, our ability to healthy and in a way a significant reason Covid was as deadly as it was/is to so many folks who struggle with sever weight and metabolic imbalances.

Very true. The perennial weakness of Western medicine: treat the symptoms, not the cause. Provide the magic pill so we can pretend we don't need to change anything about the way we live.

I have a sister who was diabetic. Was. She made the changes necessary to reverse her diabetes. No more insulin.

What is it about the southern tier of the US?

Higher rates of diabetes in the US than pretty much anywhere else, American exceptionalism strikes again. Is it the added sweeteners? Maybe, just how much I don't know. Though I have been actively trying to minimize my added sugar intake, it is ridiculous how many products have added sugar in them. I was quite surprised to see sugar in siracha hot sauce, fortunately Franks is sugar free.

\An observation. I've just had a guest here from Texas, she has severe digestive issues, has to be dairy and gluten free, and is so traumatised by some of the problems that food has caused that she was going to try and bring enough food here to NZ from her home, to keep her for a month.
I persuaded her that we could in fact provide suitable nourishment so she didnt have issues with customs.

She was here, with friends, for a month, ended up eating a lot of foods that back home would have made her very sick, and had no issues whatsoever.

    I find that very telling.

The Govt. of India has been scrutinizing the patent rights of Big Pharma for quite sometime now, with considerable success.

Interested parties would need to Google "Govt India vs Big Pharma, cancer drugs" where a lot of the action has unfolded.

On a wider perspective, US friends visiting Rio described to us how Medicare and their health insurer have teamed up to supply a service that may go unmatched in most parts of the world. so they said, while also adding "Thanks to Obama".

In sharp contrast, my next of kin in the UK complain bitterly of how their NHS (National Health Service) has gone down the drain pipes....frankly nearly as bad as Brazil´s, although the latter is probably the giant (numbers) of socialised medicine anywhere.

local Walmart has a sugared water aisle and sugared/salted/oiled corn and flour products aisle. One end aisle refrigerator is full of one gallon jugs of sweet tea for not much more than the price of water. Sugar water instead of plain water during hot weather is a lot of calories. About 15% of bagged fresh string beans or sliced fresh mushrooms rot and are tossed. Walmart is able to display chilled pre wilted broccoli. I think the broccoli is put in a hot room for six hrs.

The nº 1 country for diabetes in the world is INDIA by their own admission :

    https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/...w/95509990.cms

What the author of the above article does not mention is the very-high consumption of desserts and sweets in India, although changes of life-style over the last 25 years have impacted people´s diets in a way to enhance the onset of diabetes.

It would appear that in India the supply/demand/pricing for insulin was not worthy of a legal battle in the courts, as was the issue with cancer drugs.

BTW the map in #22 ....India does not make the grade on the world diabetes stage !

Best friends girlfriend has Type 1 her whole life, she's all of about 90lbs soaking wet, and on a strict macrobiotic diet.

My other friend became a type 2 diabetic due to weight, lack of exercise and diet. He got the gastric sleeve lost a ton of weight, exercises and eats better but 5 years later he's still a much thinner healthier diabetic.

No need to shame people with a disease. Personally I have high blood pressure, I'm obviously fit, I eat extremely healthy, but my HBP is genetic so I take daily meds that put it back to normal, so I don't stroke out before my time Now my buddy tells me about all sorts of Chinese herbs and acupuncture and eliminating wheat, dairy, intermittent fasting, yadda yadda yadda will cure my HBP as well as my degenerative back ( like it's going to grow new disks by sticking pins in me ?)

He even tells Renee because she has Raynaud's disease where the here fingers turn white in the cold. He told her to take this Chinese herb that his girlfriend takes to battle the same thing. When Renee asked his girlfriend if it worked ? She said NO but Mark keeps buying it for her with the false belief that it must be doing something.

A good lifestyle advice is always useful but I agree with Joe that blaming the sick is certainly not socialist behavior
By the way the production cost price of Insulin in Europe/US is approximately €1,5 or $1,5 per ml

Here is the price for 10 ml in France.
    Made by highly profitable companies.

    Prix : 12,46 euros (1 flacon).
    20,91 euros (5 cartouches).
24,52 euros 5 ready to use syringes.

Diabète is a long time disease, so it's refund at 100 %.
You normally don't even have to pay, the SS pays the pharmacy.

I understand most of the generic drug manufacturers have relocated to that part of the world, so that is not surprising.

Hahahahahahaaaaaa.... My Dr told me I was ONE of hundreds of his patients that completely changed his habits and is taking an active role in his treatment plan outside of popping pills. And I waver all of the time . . . Effing unicorns and rainbows.
In the US this perverted idea of “blood and soil” over “constitutional principles” is the most radical and anti-democratic and anti-Conservative idea I have heard in my lifetime.
